If I'm out and know I'll be intermittently taking pics, I'll set a moderate length of time for the camera to power down automatically rather than switch it off. That may not be an option on all...

Not sure what you read, but the S90 does not have wi-fi built in. You can only transfer with a USB cable, or by taking the card out and using a card reader. Alternatively, there are SDHC...

Hopefully the OP got an answer a year ago :-) I just gave this a quick try with my 7D, it does seem possible to set the 580EXII power output manually while being controlled from the ST-E2....
