I find this lens low in contrast until around f/2.5. It's sharpness is pretty good but appears to lack 'bite' on the screen wide open IMO. At f/4 it's wonderful on the D800e.

Image quality vs convenience is everyone's big question for travel. If you have a D800 I would go with 18-35G and 85/1.8G. The latter is small and light with superb IQ so a perfect travel lens...
-
For personal use this is exactly what I would recommend instead. However for weddings...
The 24-70 would be your workhorse at a wedding and IMO no substitute.
-
The 16-35 has more distortion in raw than jpg? Are you making this up how does this make sense?
-
I have the 14-24, 24-70, 24/1.4G, 28/1.8G, Sigma 35/1.4 and they all serve different purposes. I don't have the 16-35/4 but my impression is it's almost as good as the 14-24 but smaller and more...

Japanese central bank just announced massive quantitative easing (printing money) just like US central bank recently. If Nikon decides to keep US/Europe prices the same maybe we could do a...
-
Yes that's what I meant trade the DX camera in for a used D700 and keep the 14-24.
Just add 85/1.8g which is also superb and you should be set. Will you miss something in the middle? Maybe...

I have both the 35/1.4G and the Sigma 35/1.4. I love the sharpness if the sigma @f/1.4 to f/2 and indoors it's no doubt my go to 35mm. However at f/5.6 I actually think I prefer the rendering...

I think the superb 14-24 is a waste on DX. It's bulky and heavy (for travel) and really was designed for FX.
Any prospect of selling the D3100 and picking up a used D700? Combine 14-24 with...

I really liked it on the D3 but I sold my 20/2.8D after getting the D800e. I loved the compact size but the corners never got sharp at any aperture. It's good in the central zone even on the...

I would suggest taking the D800 and leaving the D4 at home it's smaller with better IQ. I doubt you'll need to shoot anything at 10fps.
If I were going the 16-35 would be my main lens on the...

Yup. I've gained even more respect for the 14-24 on the D800e. Took shot of an elderly commencement speaker with the audience in the background and I could read her text and count her chin...

Sure. Independent of price the 1.8g is the 'best' 85mm for me and I would hazard a guess that the 1.4g is the 'best' for you. Lets move on.
-
They are both great lenses with slightly different rendering. The 1.8g is more clinical and cooler while the 1.4g is more cinematic and warmer. The 1.8g has a slight resolution advantage IMO. I...

After reading about this on Lloyd Chambers site I bought the Zacuto Z-finder which is basically a loupe for viewing the LCD screen. It works well in bright sunlight as well as near dark. It's...

I'm bias. I have the D800E and wouldn't shoot with anything else at the moment given it's the best sensor on the market (and hence image quality) and has been for the past year. The AF may not be...

I have the VRI version (bought 10/2008 during economic meltdown the only time it was readily available from B&H).
I agree it's a heavy fat clumsy lens but I use it handheld most of the time and...

Why such small apertures and slow shutter with iso 2500?
This lens is terrific @f/2.8 allowing for sharper action capture, less noise, more DR, etc.
-
Agree with something like 18-105 as a do everything daytime lens and 35/1.8 for evenings and dark woods.
-
For more blur one of the 85/1.4 would obviously be better. Full disclosure: on my D800e I think the best 85 available for any price is the 85/1.8G.The 'legendary cream machine' 85/1.4D is a very...
