In reply to:

Hugo808: Heh, heh, good old Pentax. They've always been a revolutionary company that pushes boundaries and comes up with mold-breaking new ideas.

In the 60's they developed open-aperture metering and reflex viewfinders but I suspect their glory days are behind them if their next big thing is pretty colours!

Mind you, maybe my old Spotmatic might have sold more if it had come in raspberry ripple flavour, who knows for sure?

yes, no innovation at all, just a on-demand AA filter or on-sensor astro tracking, for example

In reply to:

papa natas: Just a little remark here, please. And I'm quoting your text:
"..Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting children and young adults."
The disease is not Universally commonly fatal.
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common lethal generic disease among...
CAUCASIANS. (OMS)

but isn`t sickle cell disease a kind of protection, against malaria, spread thanks to selection pressure?

Frank_BR: Nano coating? Oh, no, another manufacturer who tries to tell other version of the same old fairy tale about lens coating!

It all started in the '60s when Asahi Pentax created a hype with SMC (Super Multi-Coating). Since then, the world has had to hear all this blah blah blah about the magical qualities of the various types of coating used in photographic lenses.

Some acronyms created since then by the fertile imagination of the lens manufacturers:
SMC Pentax
EBC: Fuji
T*: Zeiss
MC: Pentacon, CZJ, Tokina
SSC: Canon
C: Nikon
N: Nikon
SHMC: Hoya
UMC: Samyang
VMC: Vivitar

you are forgetting HD and Aero bright coating from Pentax as well :)

On Pentax K-3 preview (959 comments in total)
In reply to:

bilmenot: I don't agree Pentax is "doomed", it is a small company not only produce cameras but also a line of optics, binocular...etc., and it has root on photography like the "big two", it understands what a real camera should be like, Pentax did not bought things up from others and put it's stamp on it ! Pentax made very nice camera with specs exceeded other made at the same price range. What I worry about the K3 is the sensor shift motion blur thing, I dropped my K5 once onto hard concrete from couple feet up, and the SR is half dead and shift out of place, I spent $400 to replace it, this sounds silly but I don't want to invest on the MKII for just minor improvement. That was an extreme test on a camera, but I worry the sensor SR mechanism will eventually shift out of place after some normal bumps, sensor at that high resolution requires absolute precise alignment. And btw I hated the tilted LCD, it will make the camera looks cheap, and you won't see that on the flag ships of the big two.

bilmenot, I guss you were unlucky, my K5 has survived really hard fall on stones, numerous smaller falls and I even took a 0,5 m dive with it, without any issues

On Roundup: Digital Cameras for Kids article (64 comments in total)
In reply to:

jhinkey: Don't underestimate the ability if today's kids to adsorb and master complicated things. My two 9 year olds constantly surprise me in their ability to quickly become proficient with electronic gadgets of any sort.

Heck, one of my girls frequently asks for my D800 (with 50/1.8G or 50/1.2 AIS attached) and takes very respectable images (of course under strict supervision) - the only issue is that it's too big/heavy for her hands.

I've been thinking of getting her a used Panasonic G3 and kit lens for a few hundred $$ - it's small, light, has a viewfinder (I find it's tough for kids my girls age to hand-hold a point and shoot very well), and takes very decent video.

She currently has a Nikon S30 which is fine, except the image quality sucks and she can clearly see that.

This list is a good start, but there are plenty more kid-friendly cameras out there for sure and even used last generation m43 cameras can be a great camera for a kid that is proficient with electronic stuff.

she might like the pentax Q7 :)

In reply to:

jonikon: I am not impressed with these images at all. IMGP0213 looks like a poorly exposed flat P&S shot, and the guys white shirt in IMGP0163 is blow and shows no detail. I could go on, but let's just hope the problem is the operator and not the Pentax camera.
-Jon

guy in hat shows no detail? I would say that image is dripping with details
