Rocky Mtn Old Boy: I am curious why the Canon v. Nikon thing? Is this to reduce the competition from Leica, Sony, Phase One, Pentax, etc? I don't get it...

photoman555: Congratulations, and well done vbuhay. And you are right it does take a lot of practice and darkroom manipulation (now photoshop) to get a great shot like this. Keep up the great work...

Peter

Yes totally agree... I just called it photoshop... Most of the time I call it my darkroom in the computer..I learnt a long time ago back in the film days....that it is very important to have a good negative (exposure wise) before you can turn it into a great image. Even more so with transparency film...

Yes I agree.... These challenges should be open to all users. Canon v Nikon does not prove anything....enter this challenge with anything other then Canon or Nikon, and I urge ConanfujiX NOT to DQ you...

starman1969: That is really nice. Well planned & captured. The sky is such a nice colour too with a beautiful gradient from top to bottom. Top stuff

Thank you Starman1969, I visit Auckland a few times per year. Knowing it was goining to be a full moon, I calculated where i had to be in order for it to be close tothe tower. I went to the location, set up the camera on atripod with the tele lens mounted, and waited forthe moon to rise. I soon attracted a bit of an audience, as it was directly outside a popular drinking hole. and as the moon rose and I started to take some photographs, i looked around behind me and there were over a dozen people behind me takin picture with their phones and ipads etc....

In reply to:

aionios: Awesome shot, love the finish in the milky way and its colors!
My milky way shots always ends up with a warm tone and i never get the blue/cool tone unless i drop the temp significantly.

Did you do a photo with and without the lighthouses light beam and overlap them?

Thanks for you nice comments, alines....glad you like it. It was taken as is, two photos stitched together to to give it more width.

Great Shot Josh,
And unlike the Northern lights, I think the Aurora Australis is more elusive and more difficult to capture. Hoping to get some good aurora activity when I am in NZ for the next couple of week ;)

Thanks Ruth,
I was a bit lucky, as I went there about a week after they copped all that rain. On my previous visit there I nearly got struck by lightning, and managed to capture some lightning strikes out to sea. This time I was glad to get a clear sky to be able to capture the Milky Way and also the light beams from the lighthouse.
