raimaster: Firstly i really want to know which OS version dpr team use for this test? Second, its bit too early to make a test because new OS 10.1 just leaked yesterday (you can download it) add. new feature such as HDR and camera improvement even better. Do you want to re-shots again after upgrading the OS? I have Z10 and i think its not below the other smartphone on market today. Few camera application is really good.

Oh no way, once you buy from another carriers today (except Verizon) the newer OS is already there to download. Published since last month i guess. Why it is important? because you will have Z10 with overall much better performance and slightly better in low light shooting.

Ouch do you use Z10 from Verizon for this test?? its bad, really bad because it has the oldest OS. Try the newer ones from AT&T or Canada carrier or event download the latest OS. There is many improvement, Yes, Z10 has HDR mode, it has also stabilization shooting mode (my fave mode), - check it out nice shot by Z10:

mrwul: Set aside the price, an increasing group of people are not in favour of carrying around a bulky DSLR.

Instead they seek an outstanding compact camera, fitting in a big (coat) pocket, or a small 'belt bag', with preferrably an APS-C sensor.
They may be the "once in a while photoshooters", but whilst doing so, they donot wish compromise on quality too much, accepting that compact cameras are simply incomparible to DSLRs.

I think there aren't too many compact camera's with an APS-C sensor.

Fujifilm x100s:
127x74x54mm (5x2.91x2.13"), 16.3 MP, 2.8" screen (460.000 dots), 35 mm, abt usd 1400

Leica X2:
124x69x52mm (4.88x2.72x2.05"), 16.2 MP, 2.7" screen (230.000 dots), 36 mm, abt. usd 1950

Nikon Coolpix A:
111x64x40mm (4.37x2.52x1.57"), 16.2 MP, 3" screen (921.000 dots), 28 mm, abt. usd 1100
(famous D7000 sensor)

The Coolpix A is the smallest and have a 3"/921.000.
In this specific segment, at this moment, I believe they offer competitive product.
=

Ricoh GR :
117x61x34mm have 3" 16,3MP (sensor K5IIs) 3" 1.230.000 28mm f/2.8 with 9 blades, built in ND for about USD.800, - you know the winner already.

have seen some great photos taken with BB Z10 http://jtinseoul.wordpress.com/ - anyway its the test before or after software updated? some said after the update the low light performance is better.

interesting about AF performance in low light:

"In single AF mode the EOS 5D Mark III's AF performs very well, too, even in very low light, despite the lack of an AF-assist lamp. Rated down to EV-2, which is equivalent to moonlight, we've been constantly impressed by the ability of the 5D III's AF system to get solid focus in light where the 5D Mark II would have been completely unable to operate."
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii/14

Pentax K-5II: The biggest difference is the latest, SAFOX X, autofocus sensor. This is designed to work in lower light than any of its rivals (down to -3EV) it will also provide greater accuracy when working with F2.8 and fast lenses.

can we say that K-5II has the same performance in low light shooting compare to 5DMKIII ? plus K-5II has an assist lamp :)

with OVF pentaprism 100%, WR body, dual dial, per lens AF adjustment, focus peaking and superb IQ but price of mid-level K-30 is obviously the king of mid-level camera.

necessarily all brand has this category: mid-level ++ (ovf penta-prism 100%, WR body, dual dial, focus peaking, per lens AF fine adjustment and superb IQ with the price of mid-level camera. Look at canon, only FF canon can surpass IQ of K30 ( RAW)

In reply to:

IcyVeins: DPR Why did you fast track this camera over ones that have been available longer and are probably better, like the A57 and K-30 and GF5 and RX100?

the question from IcyVeins is very clear but still no answer from dpr team: this camera (650D) arrived later than sony 57 or pentax k30, but why get the review first???

In reply to:

ageha: The K-30's LV is much faster than the EOS 650!

nope, entry level is 1100D, both 650 and k30 are in similar level price and target. ONLY K30 has soo many plus (wr body, ovf pentaprism 100% coverage, dual dial, focus peaking, micro focus adjustment, better burst rate both jpeg and raw and ofcoure better high iso and dynamic range.) And 650D swivel LCD and supported by masiv / clever marketing :)

spoorthy: I have heard that the liveview autofocus on the pentax k-30 is extremely fast. You guys should do a comparision

+ 1 ... and let see whether hybrid AF is only marketing point?

Direct link | Posted on Aug 15, 2012 at 21:25:57 UTC
In reply to:

jj74e: so....basically the hybrid af system does nothing and is just a marketing point (for single shot, non-continuous AF anyway)

how about comparing against CDAF on Pentax K-30? it must be interesting since both camera have same target? anyway we still waiting full review on this camera (k30) as DPR promised

jcmarfilph: Prolly you need to stop down the lens to f/5.6 to get the sharpest image =D

lol ....maybe 2.8 on HS30 :)) or maybe because HS30 has no constant AF :)) if you refer to normal lens (aps-c) maybe true, but even sigma 17-50 f/2.8 its sharp at 2.8 :)) anyway do you know equivalent f/2.8 this camera compare to APS-C or FF ?? its more than 5.6 lol ... should be sharp enough even at 600mm
