I'll be a bit of a dissenting voice... I think the 10-30 is crap. I see absolutely no reason for this lens.
With that level of zoom - just use your damn feet.

Here are my "reasons":
1) Ignore birds, wildlife, and sports - for reasons you already mentioned.
2) "Spray and Pray" is AWESOME for kids - little buggers always turning their heads or blinking...
Just because I have no other Nikon gear, and am just "trying it out", I've decided on the 55-200 lense for price reasons and image stabilization at max. magnification.

Both cameras brand new, both including the 10-30 kit lens (can get the V1 with the 10mm kit for $250). I originally wanted the V2 for the flash, grip, and general ergonomics...
