I use a Canon G15 myself for baby and toddler in and outdoors when I don't have my DSLR. Never needed a flash except for when they're moving too much. But if you can afford one, go for the Sony...

Very good point! Operation of a DSLR is so different from a P&S, that the brand becomes irrelevant once that path is chosen.
