Thank you, that's quite helpful. It had forgotten that it's possible to get a shallower DOF at a higher rather than lower aperture number, but of course that's the case because of the zoom lens....

thanks all - and you're right, I was referring to DOF. What I'm looking at is more like a f8 shot. It seems quite misleading then that the small compacts are being advertised with wide apertures...
