The holidays are almost here, and so to is the second-last weekend of 2013. It seems that camera manufacturers are in a gifting mood, because this week we have one of the busiest Firmware Friday updates in recent memory, with new firmware and software for no less than nine still and video cameras from five manufacturers. We'll kick off this week's roundup with Pentax, which has just delivered its first update for the flagship APS-C digital SLR, the Pentax K-3. (A camera which, incidentally, we're now shooting, having...

In 2011, Vision Research unveiled the Phantom v1610, a camera that wowed the world by hitting 1,000,000fps. Now the same company has improved even further, with the new Phantom v2010. While still maxing out at one million fps, the v2010 improves on its predecessor by shooting faster at its maximum 1280x800 resolution — where it's now hit 22,000fps. The Phantom v2010 is capable of that amazing 22,000fps at 1280x800, with ever increasing speed as the resolution decreases. 640x480 will get you 62,600fps; 384x256 hits 155,500fps; and...

In 1968, the Apollo 8 mission went to space, the first manned voyage to orbit the Moon. On December 24, while traveling around our satellite, the astronauts took a series of photos that were to become some of the most influential of the 20th century. Dubbed "Earthrise", the images showed the Earth ascending from the Moon's horizon, and it was only a matter of chance that the module was rotating so that the astronauts happened upon that incredible view. Now, in celebration of the 45th anniversary of that incredible shot, the NASA...

The Sony A7r is an absolutely incredible device, and one that might be a game changer for the world of mirrorless cameras. And this ad from cinematographer Simon Hammond doesn't do anything to show off the strengths of the camera. It doesn't delve into the astonishing image quality, or how tiny of a full-frame camera it is. But it does show one of the most incredible lens changes we've ever seen — done by two skydivers plummeting through the air. Sure, the lens change scene that happens at around 0:30 in the video below might be...

I've just posted the second installment of my Shooter's Report for the Panasonic GM1. In this post, I expand upon a point I mentioned in my first blog post about the disappointing close-focusing ability with the GM1's 12-32mm kit lens. This time around, I've now had some time to play with another lens, the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 M.ZUIKO Pro, which has a very useful close-focusing distance. Thanks to the Micro Four Thirds standard, I was able to swap back and forth between Panasonic and Olympus lenses with ease! I also experimented with a true macro lens...

Earlier this year, we profiled David Guttenfelder, an AP photographer whose incredible Instagram stream has given us one of the most astonishing looks at North Korea in living memory. Now Guttenfelder's work is being further honored, as Time Magazine has labelled him Instagram Photographer of the Year. Guttenfelder is the AP's chief Asia photographer, and was one of the first to be allowed into North Korea. And in recent times, he's taken to using his smartphone and Instagram to help him document the isolationist country. Given...

Who doesn't want dreamy bokeh? Olympus claims this $700 fixed lens camera can do just that, and we at IR exist to test these claims for you, the end user, to give you an unvarnished report of a camera's actual capabilities. I've just posted my first installment of the Olympus Stylus 1 Shooter's Report, in which I tested that and other claims on a variety of subjects and in various shooting situations. For any of you who have not yet seen our Panasonic GM1 Review, we have recently begun radically changing the way we deliver camera review content to you. Going...

Earlier this year, Blackmagic announced the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, a $4,000 full 4K video camera, originally set to debut in July. That date soon got pushed back to August, and now, almost in 2014, we're finally starting to see some information. In fact, Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, posted on the official forum, with the first official footage from the camera. We've embedded a Vimeo version below, but you can get the full size file in the link above. Here's what Petty said in his post: I wanted to post...

Every year, millions of Americans descend on big box stores for Black Friday, braving foul weather and large crowds for often mediocre sales. But if you picked up one of Target's Black Friday camera deals, you might want to keep an eye on your bank statement, because Target has now confirmed that a security breach has seen 40 million user accounts affected. This isn't just a situation where online accounts have been exposed. The customer names, their card numbers, and the cards CCV and expiration dates were all in the affected...

This incredible acrylic model Leica was created by Brazilian designer Marcelo Ribeiro for the company's 100th anniversary. Originally produced for the Leica Store in Sao Paulo, by Ribeiro under F/Nazca (Saatchi & Saatchi Brasil), each one would come as an acrylic sheet, and you would then punch out each piece, and combine it into a model of the actual thing. According to Leica Rumors, the kits was originally meant to be a gift from Leica to anyone who had purchased a Leica M-camera in that year, "but due to the final high...

There are big changes afoot today at the helm of Sony Electronics Inc., the company behind the Cyber-shot and Alpha / Alpha NEX camera lines. Current President and Chief Operating Officer Phil Molyneux, a 26-year veteran of Sony who came up through the ranks from the company's UK semiconductor and component business, is to step into an advisory role as non-executive chairman, effective January 1, 2014.     The SwatchMate Color Capturing Cube is a Kickstarter for a small gadget that will not only let you capture the color of anything in the world around you, but will then share that color information with your smartphone, as well as Photoshop. And if the crowdfunding attempt hits a certain goal, the Cube will gain "light intensity sensor", allowing you to use it as a light meter for photography. The Cube works by having a small sphere inside its body, with a small hole on one side. You place the object you want to sample up against...

HoverZoom is a popular plugin for Google Chrome that enlarges thumbnails on mouseover, so you can see large images on Flickr or Tumblr without having to click through to each. But the plugin was just updated, and according to a post on Reddit, it's now infected with malware. Reddit user Kruithne spotted the change, and explained in his post: The HoverZoom extension appears to be injecting malware scripts into every page you visit. On a brief look over the scripts they appear to be storing information regarding the websites...

Modern luxury car advertisements have reached an almost platonic ideal through their sameness. So many of them seem to take exactly the same route: a stately voiceover, classical music, and panning shots beautifully observing the vehicle's lines. But what happens when you take those exact techniques, and use them on a car that's a bit less...luxurious? You get Luke Aker's attempt to sell his 1996 Nissan Maxima GLE Sport Sedan. Posted alongside a Craigslist listing for the car, Aker went whole hog in recreating your typical car...

The Sony A7R is here, and it looks set to change the camera market forever. No longer do you need a bulky DSLR if you want absolutely top-notch image quality: The 36-megapixel Alpha 7R will turn out razor-sharp images that give even medium format a run for its money, and yet it'll fit in a coat pocket with a lens attached! The A7R answers the hopes and dreams of a legion of photographers who crave full-frame sensor goodness, but who -- until now -- have had to settle for a crop sensor if they wanted a fully-featured...

For that scant handful of users that have a Google Glass to play with, Google has just released a significant update in the form of software version XE12. This update brings a number of new features, including the ability to join a Google Hangout from your Glass, but the most interesting — and controversial — feature is the ability to take a photo with a wink. The new version of the software comes with the ability to add a lockscreen, Google Hangouts, and better music introduction. But what's raising a lot of eyebrows is the...
