I've had much pleasure from a two-lens FX travel kit using only the 60g and an older 20-35 zoom. Here are several samples from my D700 gallery and the 60:

I don't have DX, but I like buildings and I've traveled in Europe enough to know that I'd want the DX equivalent of at least a 20 rather than the 27 that an 18 will give you on DX. I've been there...

I've just used an old HN-3 hood that I already had with a 40.5 to 52mm step up ring. Here it is on the 10mm f2.8, but of course it works just as well on the 10-30.

It's a disappointment that the S might be a low end model, since there was an original model S that wasn't -- and could suggest a high end enthusiast body!

My printed V1 manual is 73 pages (User's Manual), but I downloaded a 206 page Reference Manual from the Nikon website. So there's more available material for study.  :)
