If you  press the AF/AE L button, regardless of its function (I think), any changes to the aperture dial after the fact will not affect your exposure.You must unlock AF/AE and relock it.

Have both. I use the Yongnuo 560 in Manual with SMDV Flashwave IIIs. Work perfectly. If you want TTL, however, I don't think there's anything compatible for both formats.

Not sure what you mean by dinky feel.It has a heft to it compared to the X-E1.

Then it is definitely the metering, not the focus.I just tried it out. 1. Locked AF, half shutter for metering - stutter.2. Locked AE, half shutter for focus - no stutter, just focusing.

The momentary freeze is caused by metering.If you lock AF, then half press the shutter, the freeze still exists.If you want a lag-free EVF you'll have to look at a GH3.

You do mention a lot about the X-E1 besides just the LCD. However, the 460k screen is adequate for chimping, but I wouldn't be checking critical details on it. That would be done at home.
