Why do I want this?  Martin got it right.  I don't want to expend the battery or put uneeded wear on the VR system. The D700 got this right.  I am dissappointed that Nikon made the change.

I prefer to control focus with the AF-ON button on the back of the camera.  With my D700, this button activated focus but NOT vibration reduction.  With the D800/D800e the AF-ON button activates...
