I would say it makes _zero_ difference in image quality. In fact, you'll notice that compact cameras with higher megapixel counts start to look noisier at base ISO than their lower-megapixel brethren.

My guess is that it will be the same. The entire reason for closing the aperture on the long end is to preserve the overall image quality.

The G12 does f/4.5 at 140mm with a 1/1.7" sensor. This new Fuji can do f/2.8 at 112mm with a 2/3" sensor. So it has much better light gathering at the long end, and better subject isolation as well.

Then again, magnesium isn't exactly gold, it's just something they usually cut from cheaper cameras to save a few bucks.
