Replied in G1X Brief Hands-On
Yep, that may be true. But to be fair, most lenses look a little worse wide open, whatever f number that may be.

Replied in G1X Brief Hands-On
I don't plan on buying either camera, but looking at studio comparison images it's pretty clear that the G1X's ISO 3200 images look about as good as the X10's ISO200-400 images, so you've already...

Replied in OM-D opportunity missed, heritage trashed?
You obviously have not been paying attention for the last 10 years. All of Olympus' digital IL cameras have used a 4/3 sensor. Yet you expect them to change sensors and start an entirely new lens...

Replied in f/1.8-2.6 lens
Worse DR? Can you give me a side-by-side example? I don't care about charts.
And by "high ISO" I assume you mean "more noise at high ISO" which side-by-side comparisons debunk, in my opinion. As...

Replied in f/1.8-2.6 lens
I don't own this camera (in fact, I own a Canon), but can you explain to me how the smaller sensor was a problem? In side-by-side comparisons I prefer the high-ISO photos from the P300 to those of...

Replied in G1X or NEX7 Comparison Pro's Cons for me anyway.
You may also want to compare the Panasonic GX1.

Replied in Not necessarily
I would bet money that it's actually 1/1.5". The only reason they are adding the X is because they are running out of numbers that don't sound dumb. G13 is an odd-sounding model name. (G11/12 are...

Replied in G12 or S100
I would say it makes _zero_ difference in image quality. In fact, you'll notice that compact cameras with higher megapixel counts start to look noisier at base ISO than their lower-megapixel brethren.

Replied in S100 vs S95 JPEG High ISO compare at Cameralabs.
Keep in mind that, at high ISOs, a lot of that so-called detail is really just noise. Fool's gold.

Replied in Found it - very interesting
Did you look at ISO 3200? The S100 looks pretty dang good. The biggest improvement is in the uniformity of the noise... far fewer chunky blotches visible on solid dark colors. This makes a big...

Replied in S100 sharpness and auto settings
I think your observations are off. The big difference that I see between those two photos is that the S100 photo looks far more natural, with more ambient light from the lamps making its way into...
-
Replied in S100 sharpness and auto settings
If you turn off Auto ISO won't that force the flash shots to be whichever ISO you choose?
I actually think using a higher ISO is the preferred method, as it allows in more ambient light thus...

Commented on Lytro announces Light Field Camera news story
B64: The same software that allows them to selectively focus on one plane could easily put the entire photo in focus. But that isn't a good way to demonstrate the Lytro's post-focus capability is...

Commented on Nikon V1 comparison shots added to dpreview database news story
I don't see it, Freddy. The only difference I see in color and detail are the difference in resolution and manufacturer's defaults, like sharpening and color. We shouldn't expect a huge difference...

Replied in S100 optics worse than S95?
My guess is that it will be the same. The entire reason for closing the aperture on the long end is to preserve the overall image quality.
-
Replied in f/2.8 at the long end = better
The G12 does f/4.5 at 140mm with a 1/1.7" sensor. This new Fuji can do f/2.8 at 112mm with a 2/3" sensor. So it has much better light gathering at the long end, and better subject isolation as well.

Replied in Pentax Q or for the same price the Sony A77
Then again, magnesium isn't exactly gold, it's just something they usually cut from cheaper cameras to save a few bucks.
-
Replied in Q plus fish eye for street shooting. What do you think?
Shooting fisheye shots is a lot of fun. Most people won't like using it for /everything/ though. Straight lines (buildings) end up curvy, and you have to get really close to people before they fill...
-
Replied in Missing the point...
I believe you are referring to the FZ20, which used a 1/2.5" sensor. The FZ50 had a maximum aperture of f/3.7 at the telephoto end. Both cameras had *massive* lenses, relatively speaking.
I...

Replied in Pentax Q vs. iPhone 4 (dc watch photos)
I don't think they are going for pocketable, I think they are just trying to reduce the size (and price) of the giant bag o' lenses. If you're someone who likes to carry a lot of lenses around,...
