I like photographers just fine. I sterotype them when they spend more time talking about their equipment than using it.

Sounds to me like you should choose another brand.  You will always have doubts, just move on.

Bought my D800e last July.  It was fine out of the box and I have not bothered with any firmware updates.  Not sure what you could test for in a store with any accuracy or certainty.

I agree.  I stopped using those sites years ago. Between a fraudulent power seller that EBAY refused to do anything about because of the revenue they generate for EBAY and the problems I have had...

My local shop matches internet prices and gives me service.  I buy most of my things there. Perhaps the big box stores are their own worst enemy with no camera knowledge and no interest in helping...

I carry my Nikon AW 100 with me when I mountain bike but I have no idea what your definition of "best" is
