I don't think its a sudden craze, I think Panasonic and Olympus got there in their respective line up. It's all cool, we have the choice.

OP is asking about wide lenses, but since we are at it, 14-42 is not tele enough! 14-140 is very convenient and 100-300 could find lots of use for landscaping.

This is not to say that it cannot or should not be done, but 24mm equiv is on the wide side for head to toe portraits.
