I would suspect that camera shake is the real culprit. The good shots, VR on or off, are simply a matter of random luck.

The D4 is not laid out like the D700. I have both. The issue is not proper exposure as you have adressed, but that on the back of the D4 the ISO and QUAL (jpeg/RAW,tiff, etc)...
