  • It's 'June gloom' time here... marine-layer clouds that often stick around all day long. Will try f/3.2, focused on the tracks, next time we have some actual sun at sunset. The sky is so much...
  • @Detail Man, and others who are giving advice here -- You've gathered so far that I'm interested in low-light photography... often, with a moving subject. Back to the start of this thread....
  • OK! Same spot, train came by on schedule about 20 minutes before sunset. But today, thick clouds over the sea. Darker than yesterday. Lens wide open 28mm equiv, 4X grad filter over the sky, focused...
  • Thank you VERY MUCH for taking the time to work this through! Later today, assuming the Amtrak train shows up sort of on time, I'll try it again... focusing on the tracks, 1/640, f/3.2, ISO 250....
  • Let's see. I'm using two Tiffen 52mm 2X grad filters screwed together to make a single 4X filter. I rotate the filter ring so that the top half is dark, and the bottom clear. Scene -- sunset, by...
  • Earlier today, taking a picture at sunset with a 4X glass grad filter held over the lens of my little RX100, found that if I tilted the filter, I could 'walk' the bright-sun flares up or down,...
  • @ Karl -- tried it again today, on M Manual... speed at 1/640 (freeze that train!), f/5.6 (DOF!) and ISO at 800 (highest acceptable on the small-sensor RX100). Used 4X grad filter to darken the...
  • Oh, this is fun! My RX100 sensor is called 1" because of an old TV camera tube outer diameter measurement! What a kick. My first career was in advertising, and I NEVER could have dreamed up...
  • Lee Jay -- then since the lenses on DSLRs are much larger, their apertures are also much larger? F/1.8 stays f/1.8 ... but the physical size of the aperture opening changes as the lens gets...
  • Karl, I'll try a faster shutter speed, like 1/640, but I don't think there will be enough light, even at the RX100's f/1.8. But I'll give it a try. Other way  might be to have one of our surfer...
  • Doesn't the sensor size determine how much light it can gather? As for DOF, you're right, the smaller the better for maximum DOF.
  • Replied in Depth of Field
Oh, you're absolutely right. But for me, interested in low-light photography, my problem's the other way -- keeping as much DOF as I can get without too much noise.
  • As an aside, an watching John McEnroe right now on the US PBS Charlie Rose show. Still sparky!
  • Created discussions 1" sensor... the sweet spot?
I'm starting to think that cameras with a 1" sensor may be just right for low-light photography... that magic tradeoff between DOF and image quality, when the lens is wide open but you still need...
  • Here's another one... cloudy today, but sky area is still very bright. The 4X still works fine, giving an image that is easy to balance light & dark areas in a bitmap editor... I use inexpensive...
  • Could stay up all night running through those K-50 color combinations!

Have to remember that there will probably be a black lens on it, like if I get the 18-135 WR package.

    Let's see... if I...

  • Back to the colors -- guess I can't order the K-50 with a matching-color 18-135 WR lens? Unless I'm wrong, the only color-matched lens is the 18-55 WR?

Just checked the Pentax site... the color...

  • Well, if I ever move up from my K-01 to a DSLR, that K-50 with the 18-135 WR looks like a sure bet.

I like all the color choices, too. As long as they only make pink ones for the Mary Kay ladies!

  • For US $2,800, Leica couldn't hang an optical viewfinder on that thing?

But it oozes tradition, like the tradition of a staggering price.

Anyway, today I'm back to my project of sticking a...
