codeNsnap: If only the D600 had 51 AF points...39 is perfect for the APS-Cs, but taking a D7000 and shoving a FF into it and not designing the D600 from scratch is why I'm staying away from D600..if it was priced at the rumored $1500-1600 then that's a different story

lol. You didn't test it very well Beany. You can have 11 points with the D600 if that's what you want. In fact you can have 9, 11, 21 or 39. With the 6D you can't have more than 11 period. I wouldn't get too excited by a camera that's just goint to limit you with backwards technology if I was you...

Peiasdf: Looks very much alike D800 except lower resolution.

A strong reason to buy it I would say... The independent DxO score for the sensor put it right up there with the D800.

Wow, here come the whiners who don't know when they're getting another class leading product from Nikon. The AF by all accounts is fast and accurate. By comparison take a look at the flimsy Canon 6D with its poor AF with only 11 points and ONE, yes one cross type sensor. The D600 pretty much has everything the serious amateur needs....

Timbukto: IMO with the QA/QC problems of the D800 and looking at these studio shots...unless there was a *vast* improvement made in ACR from the D600 to the D800...the D800 is giving you larger file sizes without an increase in detail. Look at all the feathery and fine detail bits of the studio shot...the D600 is showing more *true* detail. That or someone had a duff 85mm 1.8 on the D800. Looking at these shots I would never buy the D800 over the D600 and suffer the extra file bloat if I'm not getting more true detail. I think 24MP which Sony uses for their new flagship might be the sweet spot for classical Bayer AA filter type cameras? D600 really looks killer here...

Of course, buying the D800 over the D600 is purely about file bloat, it gives you nothing else. Lol.

Sad Joe: Had 24 hours to consider my feelings towards the 6D (as many will know I've been awaiting a decent FF body without a massive price tag for ages) and it strikes me that the 6D should/ will be cheap when it reaches the market - Canon have dug up bits from their parts bin - so costs are low, there is NOTHING innovative or expensive to manufacture here - BUT in doing so they have pi**ed off Canon fans like me - we want more for our money (check out the Nikon D600 spec - just a hint Canon) and when the price begins to fall it'll pi** off even more as it will confirm that this Woolworth's camera was light on spec and at £1800 far too expensive. I hate to say this as a proud Canon owner - if I were able to start over I'd go Nikon, the rot set in with the 50D (poor high ISO) then the 7D (complex, suspect AF) now the 6D (hit out of the park by the Nikon D600) - where has the creative passion and drive gone Canon?

I agree Joe, it's plain crap...

My god, it's beyond bad design it's ludicrous. Hasselblad in my view have pretty much the best name in the camera industry, but they quickly need to replace their design team to save the business if this is the future. This is nothing short of a embarrassing joke.

VivaLasVegas: As a long time Nikon user, this is a traumatic day for me. The newly released D600 can ONLY focus -1EV in low light, that is a full TWO stop behind 6D, WTF. To add salt into injury, they've also regurgitated the flawed D7000 AF into the new D600.

But you've never touched a Nikon Vegas. All do is blow BS and lies about the mastery of the 5DIII... You're a walking one man comedy anyway...

VivaLasVegas: Holy smokes.........it only weights 770g with battery vs 850g for D600 and 812g for A99. Oh and the battery life is 950 clicks vs 900 for D600 and less than 400 clicks for A99. OVF is the future, EVF is for high schoolers.....take in the dark place and look at the EVF, you'll see what I mean.

I guess it's been a very traumatic day for you Vegas... It's hard when you work so tirelessly to talk up a crap spec. You really have your work cut out this time though don't you :). Enjoy your day.

vFunct: Man Canon got owned by Nikon at every dSLR category this year, and for the last several years.

Agreed. It's a bad day for Nikon users because Canon showed today that they are no longer credible competition or a force to be reckoned with in developing the market. That's bad for Nikon's development. It's a good job Fuji and Sony are innovating in the market and pushing the envelope because Canon, like their copiers, can only create a poor replica of the original.

VivaLasVegas: Holy smokes........6D is made in JAPAN, sweeeeet, I love sushi. FYI, D600 is made in Thailand for maximum high product output(good luck in QC), and maximum profit.

What on earth does that have to do with the embarrassing feature set Canon want to price gouge you for? You're a fool and a borderline racist when you make statements like this. No wonder half the world is busy burning down American embassies...

VivaLasVegas: Holy smokes.......6D body is mostly magnesium alloy, unlike D600, which is mostly plastic. D4 has no built-in flash, same as 6D.....D600 has built-in flash just like rebel 650, get it? No popups for maximum weather protection, popups are prone to leaks. Don't count no D600's superficial dental floss sealing.

Holy smokes, 6D is drip proof. Drip proof. They said drip proof. The funniest and most pathetic classification for a camera EVER.

VivaLasVegas: Holy smokes.....it could nail focus in -3EV with just 11 AF pts, damn, that is awesome. FYI, D600 needs 39 AF pts. just to be able to attain focus in -1EV, same with A99. Remember what happen to D7000 vs 60D AF, that's right 60D is much better in tracking and accuracy. No softness issues with AF.

Do you realise how much of an idiot you look Vegas? So what you're saying is less is more, by that comparison the D800 therefore wipes the floor in every single aspect of the 5DIII including AF. You really are a world class fool aren't you...

It has to be said, this is pretty embarrassing all round for Canon. They're no longer competing, once again going for the price gouge...

wjansen: Seems to be lacking an eyepiece shutter--too bad.

I use the viewfinder shutter on my D800 about 50 times every time I go out and shoot. As for black electrical tape, that's a really, really poor suggestion. If you shot long exposure all of the time you would understand this isn't a minor feature.

Paul Petersen: I was hoping the price would have come in within 500 dollars of the D7000 but now its over twice the current price.
WTH Sony has embedded phase detect on their 24mpFF sensor but the new Nikon does not?
It seems Nikon has been very skimpy with the features to protect the D800's position.
Looks like I will be sticking with the D90 a little longer.
Pete

You don't know the first thing about Nikon Vegas. Or anything else come to that. Tell me, where are all of the brand new Canon offerings at Photokina? lol. Oh that's right, they're all just pipe dreams...

VivaLasVegas: 5D3 is the only D700 replacement, it is OKAY to jump ship. You don't have to worry about AF malfunctioning. 5D3's AF is a thundering successes!

And not just in the shadows :)
