Commented on Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G1 X review news story
Comparing the cityscape shots at full wide and full tele, it seems the tele end is more like 106 mm than 112 mm. Of course, getting 5-6 % less than promised is not unusual for zoom lenses.

Commented on Hands-on with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 article
I'd guess the loss is in the highly competitive compact camera section, rather than with the EVIL cameras where people are willing to pay twice as much compared to a standard 4/3rds lens of similar...

Replied in They are trying to sell Alpha mount cameras
Not to mention lens-building capacity.

Replied in Sensor antishake promises smaller lenses than Sony's
... if I have to say something positive about it. That's all I can think of so far.

Replied in They didn't repeat the Sony blunder of ...
At least they didn't repeat the Sony blunder of moving the stabilisation to the lens, so there is some hope that they can make smaller lenses for it.
I don't like this incarnation, but a later...

Commented on Pentax announces K-01 K-mount APS-C mirrorless camera news story
The only EVIL APS-C with sensor antishake. And the "design". The only two USPs I can see.

Commented on Fujifilm says X-Pro1 will set you back around $2300. UK probably £1980 news story
Because the Canon weighs more, is bigger and has no EVF?

Commented on Happy Holidays from dpreview news story
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, DPR. Have you considered that people who don't celebrate Christmas and don't have a holiday then, maybe don't say anything at all? :-)

Replied in Per-pixel sharpness
That's a rather strange expression as a pixel has no sharpness (or if you like, infinite sharpness), it's just a square with homogeneous colour. Pixel-to-pixel contrast may be better.
There is...

Replied in TZ with a viewfinder.
Thanks for the kind words Erik, I can say the same about you.
Let me add a "+1" to those who ask for a compact camera with an EVF. Though I think it's best in the top left corner. If the LCD has...

Commented on Nikon 1 System Preview Preview preview
If the camera's weight and depth is sufficiently reduced, a 1" sensor could be acceptable to me, but I'm not sure that's the case here. Also, I'm not so keen on paying "full price" for the optics...

Commented on Just Posted: Preview and first impressions of using the Nikon V1 news story
Same problem as SW Anderson below, can't see the video (is private).

Replied in 'X' marks a new low spot....
Leica were apparently OK with putting their red dot on cameras like the D-Lux 5 and V-Lux 30 which rely heavily on software correction at the wide end.
As others have said, it's the end result...

Replied in Pixel densities? Use Screen setting to compare per area performance
I get the impression that you want to compare how good they are per area, since you mention similar pixel density.
Then you should use the Screen setting, not the default Print setting. With the...

Replied in Yes, just like ILC
Yes. I have made the same point earlier. Part of the users want to have larger cameras, to have a comfortable grip for their big hands, to have room for many controls (that can also be operated...

Replied in 2 stops better read noise
Your link didn't work for me, but you are probably looking at the wrong data.
The graph for dynamic range (which indicates shadow (read) noise and thus limits the usability at higher ISOs) shows...

Replied in Choice is good
Even before µ43, I and some others discussed the EVIL concept and suggested that a 1" sensor might be a good compromise between size and quality. Or weight and quality - weight is often the...

Commented on a article
Hmmm Harrold66, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Nikon make their sensors too. Only Oly and Pentax don't.

Replied in Good EVF placement finally, but ...
Good to see someone listened and placed the EVF where it should be. Hope it sets a trend.
But the lenses (the few there are) are mostly disproportionately big. There is something desperate about...
