A simple way to see on the a7rII, when you underexposed is to turn OFF Settings Effect, Live View.

Rishi, great article, and useful.

A great point on 14-bit RAW.

Though I would probably use a True LossLESS Compressed RAW more :)

Rishi Sanyal Great work !!!

What DPR should do is create a Strandard way of measuring AF "Speed" and Accuracy.

1) In Low Light
* AF-S
* AF-C

2) In daylight

3) Speed and Accuracy of "First" AF Lock

4) Ability to Hold AF-C after the "First" AF lock at max fps.

5) What is the Set up for "that" Camera to get Optimal AF. in different conditions.

Camera Memory Recall for it to be useful must be: 1) Fast to move between at least 5 Pre-Sets ... I am talking a C1 + Back Wheel ROLL - thru the 5 Pre-Sets (once you have move the dial to memory recall) ... So, you can quickly flip between Pre-Set starting points. 2) It needs to Remember EVERYTHING , Flash setting comp. "Everything" !. (and it should save all the settings easy) 3) When you Re-Call it should be your "Saved" first version - as a Starting point (any adjustments to your Pre-Set must be a Menu Save to the Pre-Set) 4) ALL Pre-sets should be saved in the camera. ... Just my view

The ‪#‎a7rII‬ now lets you program "Silent Shooting Mode" to a Custom Button or Function Menu.
* But, what I would like to "also" see is an adiitional choice , to Program a Button (or Function Menu) to do : Silent Shooting Mode , AND "NO AUDIO SIGNALS".
That way on one Button you Kill ALL sounds possible, on a single button push.

Hawaii-geek: Sony badly needs a Nikon like "My Menu" ...

and , add another line (so it's at least 3 rows) in the Fn pop up Menu.

So, I "never" have to go into the menus.

Sony also needs a Nikon like Alpha Numeric tag on each menu item.
like A1, B3 etc
and have those Tags "Exactly" the same in ALL Sony cameras.

So, when someone says C3 "everyone" knows exactly what menu item they are talking about. :)

the Nikon "My Menu" that I like is a way to Custom the menu the way you work, in the order you want them , and only the one's you use. :)

So, you "never" have to go into the Sony menus ever.

The extra line (3) in the Fn menu is basically for the same reason but faster.
Anyone that does not use the 3 lines does not have to program them , and will not see the extra lines.

Just trying to avoid going into the Menu , and organizing it in a way that makes sense "for me" ...
and ultimately makes working with it faster.

the nice thing about the custom menus are , it's a choice.
You can use them , or not.

That choice , will help eliminate any menu system issues "you" don't like. because you are making it work, the way you work.

Hawaii-geek: I just shot some bikes at dusk on a bike path. a7rII. My favorite test on AF-C tracking going towards me. ... My choice is Wide open FE lens. Faster the better (So, 35mm f1.4 ZA FE DDSSM is a good choice) ... but I used 70-200mm f4 G FE at f4, and 35mm f2.8 at f2.8 ... EVF res set to Standard and not High. used Lock On Flexible Spot to help me in Max fps when the EVF could not keep up when they got really close (too close). and AF Priority. "for me" it was not unusual to track and get 100% at max fps. but, remember I shoot PRO bikes for money (these casual bikers are slow, even the fast ones) lol

this shot was from another day.

Should have mentioned , turned Off Auto Review.
and the linked shot was ISO 12,800 on the a7rII

DPJoe2: Thanks for taking the time to do the report. I'm finding Eye auto-focus to be stunningly fast, even in dimly lit rooms.

Wish it would work with the LAEA3 and Sonys newest SSM lens , like the 50mm f1.4 ZA SSM.

A Game Change I hope for, is that Sony could ADD on FW the ability to use both PDAF and CDAF with the LAEA3 and SSM A-Mount lens. Sony lens. :)

Kinda makes sense to me.

Well, the one I will be waiting for is the new Sony a7rii review.
How it AF with A-Mount lens and "others". Like the Canon and Nikon holy trinity.

and How well it can AF in Low light. vs DSLR. say with the 35mm f1.4 ZA FE DDSSM.

We already know the sensor will kill, it's the AF that will be the compelling part of the review. :)

well , there is those tons of other new features lol

It's interesting as a "Entry Level" Mirrorless ... the Sony a5100 ? both new and cheap. and Fast. same AF as the a6000.

The a6000 and the a5100 should not be in the same category ... it fits best here imho.

Hope there is going to be a AF-C Test between the APS-C - 7D m2, D7100, A77 m2 ... ALL with there 70-200mm f2.8 zooms ... 1 minute BURST.

And see which has the BEST Balance of fps and HIT Rate.
So, it's MOST HITS in a 1 min. Burst. :)
