Replied in any substance to back up your claim?
I've had a 400 DO for several years and wouldn't want to be without it. While I shoot mainly birds, not sports, I would highly recommend it.

Replied in another for 400 f5.6
I agree on the 400 5.6 - I just bought a used one for my grandson - It may be hard to find one under a thousand dollars, but occasionally one will go on e bay for $900 or so.

Replied in Macro lens buying advise: Canon 100mm (non-L) or Canon 100mm IS L or Sigma 150mm
I've had both Canons and prefer the L w/ IS - that being said the other is a really good, sharp lens.

Replied in Run don't walk
I'd sure go for it - but get a really good tripod (I spent $1000 putting one under a 600) plus you'll need a gimbal head (not cheap either). In the end, tho, you should be able to do some really...

Replied in remember that you lose some or all AF capability at f/6.3
One thing you might consider about a 100-400 is that 90% of your wildlife shots will be at 400 and that still won't be enough. You might take a serious look at the 400 5.6 Canon which has a good...

Replied in OK, I'll admit it. I was wrong.
The 17-55 covers the gap you have as well as giving you IS (worth it in my opinion)

Replied in sweet!
I bought one used several years ago and have used it quite a bit for birds. It's been a good lens for that purpose and light enough to carry to the field ( as opposed to my 600 which is strictly a...

Replied in 100mm Macro vs 100mm L Macro?
I've had both and I feel the L lens has a definite edge in image quality. That said the non-L is a darn good lens and certainly at a more attractive price.

Replied in Opinions, new lens for 50D!
When I read portraits and then macro, the first lens that came to mind was the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro. I've owned both the older version and the new w/ IS. While I like it slightly more, I...

Replied in 400mm options and 400 f/5.6L question
Actually they do, if you consider the 400 f4 DO - I have used one for several years in bird photography and consider it as sharp as my 600 f4 and far more handholdable.
-
Replied in It would have to be a LOT better for that price!
I've had one for several years that I use for bird photography and I couldn't be happier with it. I think the image quality is very comparable to my 600 f4.

Replied in Please help on long lens pick
Tim - one thing not mentioned is Alaska weather - My last trip we saw the sun one day out of 10 and it rained (misted) much of the time - not enough to keep you in, but enough to make weather...

Replied in Backyard Hawk - 7D - 400f/5.6L

Replied in Canon 400mm f4 IS DO lens
I have been using the 400 DO for bird photography for several years and am well satisfied w/ both the weight and the sharpness. I have two bad shoulders and probably couldn't use other long lenses...
