I am fully aware of the colour blending in my spirals but for any practical matter the issue is not really there as far as I am concerned. But, on a pixel level your test is good.

I agree it can be confusing. I like the terms nearer- and farther focus.
As for Nikon's AF fine tuning: minus is pulling the focus nearer and plus pushing it farther away.

For critical focus, zooming in to more than 100% is not a drawback. This works fine on other cameras like the D600 an 5DMkIII so it would not hurt if the D800 could offer the same thing.
