Not a huge disservice. The D3100 is a pretty competent camera. If that's all you can afford, get one. If you can easily afford the D5100, for sure get it. I have both. The D3100 is the camera...

How is edge to edge and corner sharpness at 17mm and f/2.8 on a flat surface without any DOF concerns such as in your last pic? Like the rocks above shot like I'm asking? Thanks.
-
I owned both at the same time. Only own the 18-105 VR now. the 18-105 VR is a bid sharper but more importantly has the VR. That alone makes it a "better" lens. The difference between 105 and...

Well...employed for the past twelve years means weathering the recession that put millions out of work. Yet he kept on shooting in a paid position. Lucky him! Now he has the freedom to shoot...

The D40 is a classic. Very tough to beat its jpegs. But go shoot side by side with both cameras at ISO 1600 inside some dark church (or ISO 3200 if you dare) and you'll see the difference.
-
Yes, crazy (like me) realizing that the D5100 jpegs look great without then going on and on about how if we only shot raw they'd be soooooooo much better.
-
"Worse" is purely subjective. Your "worse" jpegs, well for me they're the same. NEF compression? Give me a break. "Worse" FPS. Who's counting? OMIGOD, less AF points!!! That must mean no one...

I owned both, now just the D5100. They both take the same pics, the more "advanced" D7000 doesn't take better pics.

What we need is a forum here titled "Issues".
The idea would be for anyone with any problem or "issue" with any camera at all, well, post 'em up so we can all hear about it! That way if anybody...

"When I read about these constant problems with new Nikon bodies I wonder myself what this company is doing. It is no rocket science to build up a reasonable quality control. As much as I like...

Well, back when I shot film I had: 50mm, 35mm, 20mm, 135mm AND 70-210mm.
I'm all digital all the time now and I have three short to moderate zooms, no primes. I don't have time to zoom with my...
-
I agree that it is a good prime lens. When I had mine mounted I kept reaching for the zoom ring. Maybe you're at heart a prime shooter and will just "zoom with your feet". it's sort of a genetic...

...but...but...you're killing me man!
I'm going with the non-VC. Thanks for your replies.

I owned a non-VC version a few years ago. Very sharp lens, a joy to use. I sold it to fund another lens but I guess I should have kept it because...
I just bought a used one from my local...

I think the record here is three. Keep ordering/returning till you are at four then you'll have the record! And make sure we all know about it.

Always good to see a dissenting opinion from someone who had "issues" that no one else had.

I can't remember what the battery life on my D40 was but I shot over 900 images at an outdoor band festival yesterday and my d3100's battery meter still read full.
-
Great lens and an economical way to start out shooting primes to see if primes drive you nuts or you are indeed a "prime shooter". I've owned two of these lenses and sold them both because I found...

I did some extensive testing against my 18-105 VR. Both wide open, the Nikon is sharper edge to edge below around F/5. At f/7.1 the Tamron is sharper. So it's not like the 17-50 can never be...
