marc petzold: That kind of digicam class looses more and more marketshare...and will soon fade out within the next years. ppl using this kind of camera using their smartphones more then ever - and the IQ is good enough for that kind of application "snap shots". The only thing the smartphones don't have right now is zoom, but samsung is making for instance a android cellphone with zoom lens, also with poor IQ. HighEnd compacts are still in huge demand (RX100 III & Co) and so will be the DSLR/DSLM market. Soccer Mums would prefer something with much zoom, but smartphones will have that more and more within the next couple years.

Nokia n808. Don't bother replying unless you own one or have seen it's output.

What about on-line printing sites? You send them the high-Rez file so they can send you the print. What if they hold on to it? Print their own? Claim it's theirs?

On 5 Reasons why I haven't used my DSLR for months article (591 comments in total)

I've gone the other way..
Sometimes I wonder if there is nothing I can't capture with the sony rx100, and marvel at the output.

Yet I've gone from aps-c to full frame, and there is a quality to the images that holds you're attention longer and cannot be duplicated.

So unfortunately, my gear keeps getting bigger.

Ok, that was pretty cool!

How did he collect all these pictures from instagram? Or is instragram one of those sites that can do whatever it wants with your images?

subbu68: Had SONY thought of the A mount lens owners and included IBIS this camera would have been in my wish list.

If you read the business section, one might conclude that all companies are going to dump their camera divisions, that only canon and nikon will still be making some cameras in limited quantities in the future. Looks like Olympus will be the first to go.

dylanbarnhart: Sony fragmentation continues. Just when you thought the Alpha was great, Sony tells you the SLT is better. Then the NEX came a long with even better image quality in smaller size. Then scratch that, full frame NEX is here. Oh and lenses you bought don't work now. If you're sick of buying lenses, then the RX superzoom is for you. Actually who needs a camera anyways, since we're all using camera phones nowadays. So scratch that and buy the QX lens camera instead. All you really sacrify is image quality.

But really, no matter what lenses you buy today, they won't work for yet another Sony system to be announced tomorrow. But don't worry, there will be adapters.

I thought Sony learned a lesson from their TV days. Guess not.

Excellent summary of recent events.
I'm bummed all my excellent A-mount glass needs an expensive, bulky, cumbersome, yet-another-part-to-lug-around adapter.
Maybe sticking to the a-mount would have hindered further progress? I don't know. Yet somehow Pentax has found a way to maintain lens compatibility.

Point taken, and agreed. Still, I'm glad Sony is still innovating.

What is the software version of this? In other words, is there a program that you can easily use to do this to your own videos? An instagram-type program for video?

Best invention? Maybe, but more appropriately best innovation.

This is the camera many of us had been wishing for for many years.

Gesture: Why not hire a few folks away from Olympus to learn how to tame those JPEGs?

I stand by what I wrote. But if there is improvement to be made, who would turn that down? I'm all for it!

I feel that way about cameras in general.

I don't feel that way about the a57. Very happy with jpgs from this cam, and only shoot RAW nowadays for super low light with mixed lighting, for more control over wb.

Can't wait to get one! Even if it doesn't officially get released here, I'll be buying from Europe. It has all the cell technologies so will work anywhere in the world. Nokia is back!

Here's the offical release:
