No you don't get an infinite range of refocus, and the resolution (sort of the correct term) changes a bit depending on the point of focus selected.

  • forpetessake:

So you've never focused on someone's eyes and ended up with just the tip of the nose in focus?

  • eyefuse:

For traditional photography being able to adjust focus, even by a an inch, after the fact could be really useful.

    imsabbel:

How long did it take normal digicam sensors to go from 3MP to...

  • BJN,

You can read the PhD, or other literature on the subject. Or you can trust that there's a lot more information in light and that information can be used for selective DOF. Particularly now...

  • It is a normal lens, with an array of micro lenses at the sensor.

However other variations can be done with the lens--that's not the Lytro approach though.

  • Horshack:

A lot of big budget Hollywood movies have rather large out of focus problems--so that would be a future application of this tech.

Smoke and mirrors sure worked for Microsoft for Windows95.

On a Windows machine AutoCAD is still garbage software, in 2014.

The iPhone didn't really work as a phone for years. iTunes,...

There are NO additional direction sensors.

The technology works, some variety existed a hundred years ago.

The resolution of earlier Lytros wasn't high and the box holding the camera...

  • BJN:

Huh, I dont' think you understand the possibilies here.

  • justin:

In the case of the first commercial Lytro one could access the files and change the point of focus on a Mac--Windows support came later.

  • grafli:'

I assume you mean "you can't get less DOF than an FF like f/2.0 on 1" sensor."

  • chlam:

even bracketing with a normal camera results in differences.

  • People asked that same question about CCDs and digital cameras in the 1970s and even as late as the early 1990s.

  • It's not really a 3D camera.

  • Why if Lytro dies, does that mean that the software on your Mac will stop working?

  • vFunct:

Think a bit more about why you'd want to refocus and print.

  • samfan,

Not exactly relevant to this particular camera from Lytro, but many big budget Hollywood movies often fail to focus correctly on the subject.
