That's not necessarily true, though more likely to be true if you purchase cameras at more than 3 year intervals.

No, but at a certain point before that time Adobe is likely to stop updating say ACR for CS6. Guess it's not important if you don't use raw files from newer cameras or use different extraction...

Well Adobe just tripled the price for 3 years of use. Right it's like the cable TV bill, but that's not how the rest of my software works and I won't tolerate Adobe behaving badly....

Except Adobe plans to continue to update CS6 for sometime. It only released last fall.

Cloud computing is fine idea if you have time and need access to specialized processing power you can't possibly afford on your computer, that all has nothing to do with Adobe's idiocy here.

In the US one can still get the upgrade from Photoshop CS5 or CS 5 Extended, whatever that is, for $150. 5.1 is not listed.

Unless you want to buy a new digital camera and use ACR 7.xx to extract raws, Photoshop CS5 is plenty good. (Cue the powerusers.)
