Simon Dass: Dear host... can u increase the number of entries? i was about to upload, but its already full.
Sorry for being unclear...but I was thinking aboutdisqualifications - not about increasing the totalsubmissions' limit. You can make a lot of room in the challenge , if youDQ the entries ( at least 30% of them ) that don'tfit the rules you've set...There are macro shots without solid black or whitebackground , there are close-up shots withmulticolor background , there are shots of a fewflowers, even there is a picture of a fruit (poppy fruit)...
You can easily "increase" the limit by disqualificationthose entries ( at least 30% ) which don't comply withthe challenge's rule : "...shot of a single floweragainst a solid black or solid white background."
This is White Poplar ( Populus alba ) ...
Some entries are not photos of a weed ...
scooper1: Dave,No, you're not alone. Only a very few entries actually complied with the key requirement of the challenge. Disappointing.
Looks like the few recent challenges - in this series -are going on their own , without any signs of hosting ...A few months ago , the host explained his absencein this way : "... I was elsewhere, had a very large headache(a natural one) also, and busy just gained4-5 awards for my photographs somewhere else..."
Sorry , but my comment below is a continuation of commentsthat have been removed by the host...
Here are his business ads where he presents himself as a" Modeling Portfolio Photographer " ...http://ahmedabad.olx.in/modeling-portfolio-photographer-uday-khatri-ahmedabad-india-iid-650921338
All the modeling pictutes were not taken by Uday Khatri ...Just a two samples :This photo :https://plus.google.com/photos/113148487576670121459/albums/6030559147266053825/6030561842027166130?pid=6030561842027166130&oid=113148487576670121459... was taken by Marc Laroche :https://www.flickr.com/photos/stygian/4486536327/in/photostream/This photo :https://plus.google.com/photos/113148487576670121459/albums/6039266791987988273/6039268203652455746?pid=6039268203652455746&oid=113148487576670121459...was taken by Deborah Ory and Ken Browar :http://www.designartmagazine.com/2014/07/nyc-dance-project-photographers-ken.html
JamesD28: Just to clarify, here are some of the things which don't count as a sky phenomena:- Regular clouds- Colours in clouds due to sunrises/sunsets- Sun rays- Mist & heat haze.
The sample pictures you have provided - have nothingto do with the "sky phenomena" . They just show someforms of lens flare. The lens flare is a very common"phenomena" - especially with the ultra-wide lens andthe sun located in the centre of the photographed scene.
The entry which finished 8th - doesn't comply withthe challenge's rules :1. It was not taken with a professional DSLR ...2. It's a composite photo ( I've never seen this kind of night shot of the Milky Way - taken with shutter speed 1/125 sec.)3. The entrant is a proven cheater ( multiple accounts , exif data manipulation )...
ozziebadger : you should set the correct date and timeon your camera ...It's impossible that the photo was taken on 23th June , 2014at 23 :03 :11 ...
bcys1961: Which period is the blue hour ? Dusk or Dawn ?
Both ..." The blue hour is the period of twilight eachmorning and evening when the sun is a significant distancebelow the horizon and the residual, indirect sunlight takeson a predominantly blue hue..." - Wikipedia
tasad: ... "Additional rules: Color ONLY! ..."So , what the two B/W entries ( " zebra style " ) are doing here?
OK , generally I agree with the most of the above sentences.BTW : if we're talking about some personal manners regarding challenges , it would be nice - when using nothost's own pictures as a sample images - to ask the originalowners of the photos for a permission .These sample images are copyrighted... But here is noinformation who originally took the pictures , and no linksto the ORIGINAL ( not something like Pinterest ) source of the images ...
If the challenge is about the capital city of Rome , Italy - whythere are so many entries taken in the Vatican City State ?Vatican City State ( country) is administratively , territorially andpolitically independent , sovereign from the city of Rome ... Also , the entry titled "Roman Soldiers" has nothing to dowith a "roman soldiers " ( and city of Rome ) . Actuallyit shows soldiers of "San Marco Regiment " . The regiment islocated in Brindisi - 540 km away from Rome ...
... "Additional rules: Color ONLY! ..."So , what the two B/W entries ( " zebra style " ) are doing here?
The Duracell battery was "Made in EC " ( European Community )
Buzz Lightyear: What is great about these "runner up" challenges is the obvious high quality of photographs entered. It is a feast for the eyes to see all these wonderful images collected in one place. While they didn't win a 1st in their previous respective challenges, any of them are deserving of a top placement. My head is spinning trying to select a winner here.
At least two entries in this challenge - have won first place in previous challenges .There is even an image entered 18 times in previouschallenges ...but , so far - it did not win ...
The entry which won the 2nd place in this challenge -has won twice 1st place in these previous challenges :http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/Entry.aspx?ID=761894 http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/Entry.aspx?ID=653159How does it comply with the idea of this challenge and with thechallenge's introduction sentence : " We all know that sometimes one of our favorite photos doesn't quite get the win ..."
db.: What an uninviting and unpleasant way of expres-sing all those «Additional Rules»! Don't you think the rules set up by dpr are enough? When a child, did you want to become a policeman??
@db : sorry - but there is no such thing like" rules set up by dpreview for all challenges " ...Rules are independently set up by hosts ...Only by hosts...
desertsky - in short : you are a thief and a cheater !Even if this particular photo was taken by you -you have stolen at least three photos fromothers photographers ...http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53647016
