Uncle Frank's recent activity

  • I don't consider it an odd focal length.  It's my most used lens.  It's so good for portraits that it has replaced the 45/1.8 in my kit.  Equally good for people or pets. I also like it for stealth ...
  • I sold my em5 because of the ergonomics, and I greatly prefer rangefinder styling. The ep5 + vf4 has been my ideal solution, particularly since the shutter shock problem was solved and a 3rd party ...
  • LA may be the most image oriented market in the USA.  If you want to land professional headshot work in LA, you're going to need to impress potential clients with your gear as well as your ...
  • Created discussions A fisheye for baseball
Baseball fever has hit the Bay area, with the Giants beginning a best of 5 series with the Washington Nationals tonight. They won game 1, 3 to2. I used my Oly ep5 and Rokinon 7.5/3.5 fisheye to ...
  • Replied in The Game
Tonight, the San Francisco Giants will play the Pittsburgh Pirates for the right to participate in major league baseball's annual post season tournament. After a long season (162 games played over ...
  • Replied in Olympus 25/1.8
Oops, your English is so perfect that I thought you were from Kansas. You could always fly over, buy the gear in the USA, and use the savings to pay for your trip.
  • Replied in Olympus 25/1.8
The Panasonic 20 is a wonderful lens, but it has certain limitations.  Focusing in low light or taking pictures of fast moving kids is problematic.  I've enjoyed the 20, which was the first u4/3 ...
  • The best way to do it is to limit the number of lenses in your bag. For instance, I'll go shooting with just the Samy fisheye and the Sigma 60. Then there's never any conflict about which lens to use.
  • Replied in branding
The 7.5/3.5 gives a view of 180 degrees as measured on a diagonal, Leo. You'll find more precise/insightful information from this article at Photozone . The interesting thing is that the lens ...
  • Replied in branding
I can't tell you which of the focal lengths would best suit your style of photography, but I can shed some light on the branding issue.  Here is an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Samyang ...
  • That's the sort of thing that would trouble me if this were a posed portrait, but it's street photography, and imperfections are expected.  Leave it be; it's wonderful as is.
  • Replied in aspect ratio
Don't let that bother you.  You can set the aspect ratio to 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, or 1:1, and see the effect of the crop in the viewfinder while you're shooting.
  • Actually it works very well for shots like the one you reference.
  • Delightful... both the subject and the background.  But using the 45 makes the camera larger than pocket size.  If I owned a gm1, I'd be inclined to use the Panasonic 20/1.7.
  • I'm a jpg shooter. After much experimenting, I found these ep5 settings require nominal adjustments in LR and please my eyes. Sharpness: +1 Contrast: +2 Saturation: 0 Graduation: Auto
  • The fact is, it will take you a while to get used to u4/3 gear.  It's good, but it's different from the results you get with your 60d, and you'll have to approach taking snaps differently.  I'd ...
  • There's a 2x teleconverter built into your camera.  It's not optical... it's a crop that's sampled and upsized... but it gives you the ability to compose in camera for the 2x fov.  And it's ...
  • The em10 is an excellent choice.  It has a lot of options, but it isn't mandatory to use them.  You can ignore them until you're ready to explore, and use the camera in auto mode.  My son is a ...
  • A pl5 + 20/1.7 would be a cost/size effective solution.  It would also allow you to try out other lenses if you ever tire of the 40mm FOV.
  • Replied in mountain scape
The mountain scape is wonderful, and the addition of the herd of cattle, cowboy, and sheep (cow?) dog working in the snow give it an extra punch of interest.  Great colors and acuity.  It would ...
