rrccad: granted looks like a massive shadow pull .. but shows that perhaps .. maybe using lighting versus post processing would turn in a much better shot - there's a lot of noise on her face and in the middle grays there.

I doubt that the pentax would produce detail like this in the shadows. You can even see the texture in her skin, which to me is quite impressive.
Also, take into account that this is still Beta software. The final version of the RAW convertor may even allow for better images.

jerrith: Excellent step by step explanation. I've forwarded this article to a friend who will be visiting the northern cape in Sweden, so he can use the technique described to get a stunning shot of the northern lights there.

He's going in mid September, so maybe it will still be too bright then to see the northern lights? It is indeed the north cape that I meant.
For a sight like the northern lights I am willing to endure the cold and hoping my turstworthy camera won't mind too :-)
Anyway, it won't be for the imediate future, as I am the lucky father of a one-year old and a second baby underway, but I will get ther some day!
Anyway, thanks for the clarification!!

Artistico. I think you're right. We've been to the southern cape in South-Africa and now he is visiting the northern cape. I am a bit jealous that I won't be able to travel there together with him this time :)

Well, I can't wait to try this out. It looks very promising and should make replacing backgrounds even easier than with OnOne's Perfect Mask.

In reply to:

YSP: DPR calls full size DSLR cameras (the Nik D610 & Can EOS 6D) as the Sony A7's peers. What is wrong with DPR?? They're totally different beasts altogether! How can you compare a full-body/full-weight/full-frame DSLR to a compact/light-weight/full-frame digital camera? Furthermore, those "so-called peer models" (which they're not) have been around for a while (a lot more room inside as well) whereas the Sony A7 is brand spanking new and...as of currently..."one of a kind."

You can't compare them in the least bit--until the competition, brings out the same type/same class! It's like comparing vehicles such as a large Mack semi-truck to a Ford pickup truck, they both haul & transport--but size, engines & power-ratios will differ dramatically! -Here's how it would sound like: "The Mack semi hauls massive weight effortlessly whereas the Ford pickup truck has a considerable amount of trouble & strains to keep up when hauling the same size load."

*Very, very, unfair and invalid DPR!

@Shawn Barnett, looking at your list of options, it's quite obvious you are biased and should not write reviews without a disclaimer :-)

In reply to:

barb_s: I'm going to be upfront on the voting - since there's always talk about the negative votes. Everyone is going to see a .5 or 1 on their scores, and you can just ignore it as far as it judging your photo. the voter just blasted everyone, so those votes are not a reflection on the quality of the photo's here.

Kids will be kids :-) Anyway, it looks like most of my favourites all made it to the top!

barb_s: This challenge is filling up rapidly, therefore I will be increasing the limit approx 12-14 hours offset from the time the challenges open. I'm on vacation with limited access but I'll do my best for you all, including setting up another cat part 2 challenge.

Enjoy your vacation. Hopefully I'll get home in time to enter this one, I'm a catfanatic myself :-)

Upped my vote, as I shouldn't punish you for the host's lack of following up. Also noticed that some camera's 4:3 settings are not as accurate as they ought to be.

On India 2: Clost-up Portraits--FEMALE subjects only challenge (12 comments in total)

My compliments to the host. This is the first challenge ever where not a single image in the voting line is not following all rules.
Makes it easy to vote, purely based on my personal taste and not having to check the rules for every image.
I personally consequently give a 0.5 star vote for every entry that is not following all challenge rules. It would be great if all hosts took their hosting as seriously as you do, which would make entering and voting in challenges a lot more fun!!
Consequently only fairly high marks from me in this challenge for all entries!!
