medium format systems deliver ability to switch among Polaroid peel apart, b&w, color film, slide & digital backs within one shooting session for decades (digital backs for about a decade) already, some backs let you preset zone correction
that is one of major reasons why pro tends to use pro (medium & large format) stuff because ones can choose media for every particular snap
But 35mm cine media cameras have there own benefits - size, weight, simplicity, cost, autofocus (yes modern MF delivers autofocus capabilities and 35mm Leica M is a manual focus camera)
Provia_fan: Is anyone thinking that maybe people can use their amazing classic glass with no adapters and so on at least?? I think it's great and a very clever move by Nikon to reach an even wider audience. And who says it's not gonna be Full Frame? 35mm cameras ARE full frame cameras anyway!
you may google IMAGEK"angle of incidence silicon image capture" another subject to consider for an FF lenses especially
I like Martin Schoeller - Des Moines, Iowa - Spring 2012 image a lot.Agreed that real art is positive and peaceful.
pumeco: I've never owned a Leica but have always had respect for their design; I generally love the Leica lines, and I understand perfectly how the designer was thinking when I see a Leica Camera.
Not so in this case, it just doesn't look very "Leica" to me.
There are elements I like, such as the large round viewfinder and the simple but elegant strap eyelets, but that's as far as it goes. Edge placement and even placement of the famous red dot looks wrong by Leica standards. I have no doubt as to the quality of the camera, but from a design point of view, I think it should have retained the classic Leica minimalist but chunky feel they achieved with the M series, but adapted it for the taller SLR style camera we have here.
Too many curves.
MF instruments are not intended to be used as family 50 backs all around point&shoots.
NO THEY ARE NOT!
Accounting 30 or 50 or 70 grand to business expenses is not a lot of a big difference who prefers Mamiya would get Mamiya who wants Leica can get Leica and most go with Hassy.
Nikons and similarities are out of scope for discussion completely. 35mm cameras cannot be qualified as MF period.
The guy from Leica clearly addressed what audience the review is intended to be for. It is related to whom who posses MF experience.
PLS STOP TROLLING
johnparas11zenfoliodotcom: Someone has to say it.. "the king has no clothes!" ;-)
Is it so funny to read those posts form NEXs users regarding Leica lens adapters and Rico M module as well then, right?
BTW how many DSLRS you know that are capable to work with Leica auto focus lenses? DO you really believe that awkward body with adapter can reveal full potential of a top notch IQ lens better than a native one?
Or I know Leica lenses no good Sigma lenses are much better and APSC sized medium format camera from Sigma is the the best MF camera eve made LOL.
Sure, "no clues" flooding the topic.
DaveBowman: "This question comes only from people who have no experience of medium format at all." - oh really? I've used both the H4D and S2 systems and yes, Leica, you need to be worried about cameras like the D800. Only a fool wouldn't be, and only a pompous, self-absorbed fool would make a statement like that one.
Sorry pal but for a person who really used to MF your opinion very unprofessional. Not to mention stupid post from a 4x5 "owner" below.
There was, is & will be demand for MF and LF gear no matter what 35mm cine format crowd do believe. Do not be upset, these instruments are targeting pro photographers with pro demands.
micahmedia: Dear Leica, welcome to 2008!
(but seriously, 1080p and live view are NOT "cutting edge" and whoever wrote the copy needs a boot in the behind for insulting the intelligence of...oh, Leica-philes. N/m. Carry on!)
In all seriousness, it's good to see they got around to adding these features. Price is still bonkers, but at least they're getting closer to being with the times from a tech standpoint. This is a welcome thing.
I do not need links to M IQ, Leica M was my primarily 35mm photo-system I owned in the past (I used MF and LF as well). I purchased Konica Hexar RF M lenses because many posters on forums did believe that Japaneses glasses are good too decade ago as well LOL
I can assure you - you get what you pay for!
And yes I agreed with you that amateurs and most pro would definitely benefit from NIKON DSLR with full AUTO priority mode and ZOOM lens;)
Leica M is a special instrument for knowledgeable photographer who understands at least basics let say why 50mm prime is a special lens for a 35mm FF system.
That is why sour grapes comments from chechakos are so funny.
How many 35mm camera makers you know that supply customers with APO?
Most Japanese manufactures are not in XX Century yet if using your terminology
chadley_chad: Its stories like this that really highlight the newbies! People, don't diss a brand because of the stupid name before you've done some homework!
Some people never handle _OPTICAL RANGEFINDER_ and therefore do believe that LCD does matter on a _OPTICAL RANGEFINDER_
And yes guys who ever purchased Leica M lenses new from stock and use them do have valuable opinion about Leica M IQ.
Bigbokeh: Look say what you want about Leica - they have 80 years of incredible designs, glass and heritage to warrant the price of their gear - they hit their mark with most everything they create. Now Sony wants us to think they can play at the same level as Leica - Lexis had to prove itself worthy of Benz money - they come close - albeit without a soul - but Sony? Look my advice to Sony would be to look at why Minolta is gone and then stop following their model - Minolta had great features in their cameras but couldn't build or buy glass. Until Sony figures out who they are and what they want to be when they grow up we will continue to get these near Genius or Retarded attempts - they do keep things interesting but I won't be buying into Sony until they can figure themselves out. (Leica, Nikon are decent business models - think mounts, compatibility and longevity)
First Leica M body has build in optical rangefinder coupled to M mount that is an expensive precise piece of machinery and optics that takes a lot to manufacture on its own but let you focus manually accurately and swap lenses.
Second Leica M lenses are top notch among 35mm lenses. You want Leica M experience you have to purchase Leica M glass. I was using Konica HEXAR RF M lenses extensively in the past besides Leca M lenses so I know what I am talking about.
But this f2.0 Sony seems to be a perfect reporter companion or decent travel-family camera as well. However Sony does not deliver neither f0.9 no 50mm APO.
Leica is Leica, Ferrari is Ferrari :)
Blackraven: just need a good set of high-quality screw on lens adaptors to make it 24mm, 50mm and 75mm equivalents. Then i will buy for sure
Really? And you haven't purchased Leica M9 + Leica lenses yet?Or you want 24 50 75 from Zeiss too?
Oery: who will buy it, Paris Hilton ?oh wait...... she need it in PINK :)
1 K for 24mp FF body &1.8K for Zeiss T* lens
very reasonable for a guy who need Zeiss T* FF IQ
sixby06: It's pretty simple, really. Leica recently produced "the best no-compromise-on-quality standard lens ever" with the most recent 50mm Summicron-M, which is another showcase lens for them. Zeiss competes with Leica in their market segment, and so produces their own showcase products.
The 55mm part is most likely strategic, much like choosing a Distagon design over a Planar- by countering their own established conventions, we think "ooh, that's different! Maybe there's some secret sauce in a 55mm Distagon that makes it more special than a 50mm Planar!"
I'm sure it will be a stellar performer, and that the benefits in quality will pass unnoticed by the majority of actual photographers, but that's not who this is aimed at. Despite the various international recessions, luxury goods seem to sell as well or better than before. For that reason, i'd say this is a fairly logical product launch for Zeiss.
I am suspecting that you do not understand term APO well.
BTW being a Hassy shooter I might assure you that Zeiss is a pretty standard lens manufacture more standard than Nikons Canons Sonys Sigmas etc
And no neither superachromates no APO are just showcase lenses.
Zeiss & Leica are manufacturing optical instruments not toys.
And yes, optical instruments target knowledgeable pro consumer who supposed use instruments for demanding application at work. Since optical Instruments are not intended to be toys for kindergartens the price tags are not toyish as well.
Marx81: This interesting cam seems to attract also a relatively high number of comments from people with reduced social skills . Using offensive terms under Internet cover isn't cool .
Exactly pal it is easy to find Sony sensor gamut for example but impossible Foveon one. There is no reliable information what is the real bit depth of Foveon sensor. There are no FF or medium format Foveon sensors. Only childish comments like "I am a very-very professional very pro, I trashed my Leica, I trashed my Hassy, I trashed my Linhof in favor of Foveon your are plain a.h. in case you are not adoring Foveon&Sigma" ;)
BTW as per Wiki color vision deficiency affects a significant percentage of the population but not everybody so their is nothing wrong with some Foveon unhappy photographers ;)
Sergey Borachev: Even if it does have the great colour and image qualty, there are too many limitations. So, I will first buy a few other cameras first and keep them, before I want to buy this, so that I can take also good quality photos when I have poor light, when I need to take actions, when I need to take shots of distant objects, when I need to have some certainly in reliably focussed, exposed, stablilised pictures at the right moment.
So, fine, it would be my 4th camera, assuming I win lotto :)
Regarding great colors one mights Google "foveon yellow cast"
There are only two companies that poses great heritage in superb color rendering historically they are Kodak-Film & Fuji-Film for obvious reason. Therefore if you are looking for good colors Kodak sensor based (phase one, Leica) or Fuji-Sony sensor (Nikon, Sony) photo instruments are preferable.
Francis Carver: "Carl Zeiss and its partner ARRI will present the long-awaited anamorphic lens to public. Visitors to the Carl Zeiss stand will have an opportunity to try out a prototype of the lens that is currently in the final design phase..."
Wow, considering that Bausch & Lomb had developed anamorphic lenses way back in the early 1950s, the Germans are a bit late coming to the anamorphic lens game, it seems. About 60 years too late, in fact.
Regarding this CP lens -- it is a still photo lens with a larger focus ring and plenty of witness markings on it. I guess for some, that will be worth US$4,500. For others, not.
It is not an anamorphic lens footage just an outdated photo lens Zeiss
I wish Hollywood will come with something on a par using all their modern bells and whistlers ;)
falconeyes: To anybody in the knows ...
I've got a question: Why is it that cine lenses (in general, and from Zeiss, comparing their cine and SLR offerings in particular) are much more expensive than SLR lenses -- while at the same time, the resolution requirement for cine lenses must be on the lower end even considering 4k video, i.e. 8MP?
Zeiss SLR lenses were around 5 - 35 grand USD a decade ago.
They are out of production since in terms of today cheap currencies the cost of manufacturing would result in insane figures.
Superka: Canon really lacks imagination.
I mean that if you type "M lens" at B&H search you will get both Canon and Leica.
And no Canon M does not fit Leica M and Leica M does not fit Canon M they are physically different mounts. Meanwhile there are many unoccupied by a specific mount type letters available in alphabet.
Cannon behaves kinda straightly unprofessional just as plain as that.
Canon was free to peek up another letter from alphabet instead of well known for a half-century already M mount from Leica at least.
That is really great now we can get rangefinder M-mount lens and M-mount digital body both for just 800 USD, perfect! :)
