Average User: I think the lossy compression is something Sony decided to do to maintain high frame rate given the high pixel count.

But Nikon uses the same sensors? They do not have this issue? I don not use either brand but I am interested in this sensor technology.

Thank you so much for investigating this new tech so thoroughly and calling it like it is.

I think someone said that because of Rishi DPR is getting its mojo back. I agree.

I was once at a camera club meeting where there were guys showing some photos. At least 50 minutes of the hour was spent describing the difficulty of getting some pig or cow carcasses hauled in the middle of a swamp where the birds would feed on them. Pics about the two day process too. Can you say rotten flesh and flies.

Anyhoo, in the end they also had some pics of the common crow sitting on the carcass. Maybe a hawk too, I don't remember. But man it was one tough haul. :-D

Quote from the article:

"As far as I can remember though, Canon has never offered us two cameras with the same sensor and asked us to pay more for one, to get some extra features before"

But what about the 18 mp sensor they used for years in their crop bodies?

Earthlight: The resolution as such is fantastic and I welcome it with open arms. Those claiming diffraction ruins everything need to educate themselves on the matter. Those who actually need the res will know how to handle it.

But...

The dynamic range is the same as with 5D3...? What about pattern noise? Still there too?

My point exactly...

I usually hang my camera bag from the tripod hook or use a plastic bag with a couple of rocks. In Tenerife the volcanic rocks were so sharp that they tended to rip through the local plastic bags. Well, I used two bags on top of each other. Other than that, never a problem. Just make sure you leave no bags behind.

Dear Santa, give me a Canon 1Ds MkIV with a sensor like this. Or with the sensor from the D810. I've been really good, I promise.

Oh, and I just wanted to thank Rishi for his valuable insights. Dpreview, hold on to this guy.

I should have added a smiley I guess. It's not about the mount, but the sensor. :)

Sony and Sigma have managed to pull off someting quite lovely. They are a breath of fresh air in this market.

Sigma needs to start cranking lenses out for the Sony mount. Would that not be a win-win scenario?

Well, why not. Much, much better looking than the Brick we saw earlier.

That said, talking about the looks of a camera is always sort of beside the point. But still, many people crave collectible artefacts.

Hey, this was great! Must have been a lot of work but this is the kind of thing and represents the kind of production values I think Dpreview really is capable of these days.

Keep on doing these and in-depth reviews and everyone will be happy. And remember to review the top pro models too, for flagship reference.

Maybe also a follow-up after six months of hard use by a pro: the real experience with IQ and usability, complete with discussion as you tweak the RAW files on screen.
