Neloy Sinha: I am happy that I can express my ideas about Samsung Galaxy Camera phone in this forum. No doubt it is an object I would desire. But I know that I have to be patient and determined to have it at a later date, when the initial craze will be over. There are many phones but Samsung always brings something very special. They thing for the consumers and the demand of the day. I believe this camera phone will be a real camera for many in 2014. Its improved versions will grab attention of present generation. Many camera companies have to tie up with mobile vendors for the matter of survival. If they have to remain afloat they have to sandwich "Camera+Phone" by any means or on any platform. Those who need DSLR will be different category of people. And this phone is going to give a big bite on apple. If my pocket does not pinch then there is no question of choice. At present there is not a second in the market. So Thanks to Samsung for their ambitious, innovative, research and production strategies.

and you must be from all exclusive iWorld, isn't it? do some research...

We will see a lot more activity in this area. Google's acquisition of Nik will bring cloud solutions to every day users and hobbyists. Hope Google simplifies the workflow and integrates well with other services like Google drive.

techmine: $900 lens for any system should definitely be backed by solid market research. So Nikon's research showed that there is a need to build a fast portrait lens for Nikon 1 system?? I think they just got carried away by the success of 18.5mm f1.8 lens. They don't have "value for money" dimension working.

The kind of success Sony has seen in MILC market is unprecedented, yet their lens lineup is nowhere close to Nikon 1's (even minus this one). Lens ecosystem alright but don't tell me that Nikon is going to develop a 1-lens equivalent for every D&G lens that they have for traditional DSLRs.
Interestingly, Nikon seems very serious about this system that hasn't gone anywhere in terms of market cap or general interest.
PS: I am a NikonV1 owner which I like :-)

Well thanks to Olympus for not breaking my bank. This camera indeed is expensive viz-a-viz the feature set. Next will be omd-6 with wifi and around $300 more than this to build a pseudo range.

dickg1: If Panasonic thinks this camera is going to seriously compete with the Canon S110 in attracting the "enthusiast" crowd, they screwed up big time!

In my mind, the feature that sets the Canon S110 apart from the majority of its peers is a 24mm wide end.

I recently sold my S95 and bought the S110 for just that reason. I'd much rather give up a 200mm long end to get a 24mm wide angle. The difference between 24mm & 28mm is much greater than the diffeence between 120mm and 200mm.

dickg1

$500 vs $335 for S110 that has a touch screen. No EVF but lets see how tiny(big) it would be on the Panny. Am I the only one looking for more pictures in this press release?

topstuff: I have noticed people starting to show up at public events using ipads as cameras.

When you have a wall of them in front of you, they obscure your view of the event unfolding.

I recently attended a wedding where this was commonplace.

Maybe I am getting grumpy, but I found it incredibly annoying !

And they say, regular cameras are annoying.

Now why they didn't complete the package by including gps too? I am still searching for a mirrorless camera with wifi and gps built in. Any one?

Honestly its a good camera but a bit too pricey. Its also like playing catch-up with other players something Nikon has always done outside their favorite DSLR realm. Their are still a lot of Nikon owners that will get interested. My real question is, what will happen to 1 system?

rolandct: 2 Problems with using the 8 GB version:
1) Slow transfer, however I usually am just transfering select JPGs not every pic so it's usually not a big deal

2) Geo-tagging is almost completely useless since it's based on WiFi. I'm not sure if even one of the thousands I've taken have been tagged right.

If at least 2 is fixed I would consider upgrading, but I doubt it since that would require a GPS receiver.

jquagga: I like your idea to shoot raw and process the selected ones to JPEG for the phone. The problem is the connection between phone and the card is not very good. If I am at home and my home wi-fi is ON then my phone keeps toggling between my home wi-fi and card wi-fi. Any tip how to best do the phone-card connectivity?

techmine: Whatever we Nikon/Canon fans say, this year has been Sony's year. They are slow in delivering lenses but boy, the new product(camera) philosophy has been spot on.

DPReview (where we are discussing this) has given Gold ratings to most of the SLT cameras from Sony. I don't think Gold Reviews compromise on IQ ratings. Nikon's fans screamed for a lighter body with good IQ (remember V1,J1?) and what they handed was crap.

On Accessory Review: Tamrac Zipshot Tripod article (94 comments in total)

I bought it recently for my Colorado family vacation and used primarily with my Fuji X10. I loved the portability and design. This is mainly for a small camera and not for DSLR. The camera remained attached to this and that allowed us to take a lot of group shots with 5 second setup(unfolding). Constant height helps in faster setup. You can keep it folded and use it for video for better stabilization (as compared to hand held). It even fits in most pockets, baby strollers, backpacks. OMG very very flexible.
PS - I do have a Vanguard Tripod for heavy duty use.

I didn't know that there is a kit that makes it even better....Thanks!

On Samsung announces 12-24mm F4 and 45mm F1.8 lenses for NX news story (28 comments in total)

Very competitive system from Samsung. They just need to work on buffer write speeds. I am inclined towards selling my D300s + lenses to get to a lighter and smaller system. Alas Nikon will never release a camera like NX (or other mirrorless models) so why bother...move on..
