Jogger: The sensor is far too small to be using PL or FF lenses. Its smaller than 43 and once you crop, you probably looking at a 3x crop factor.. good luck getting any decent wide to normal lenses. They should have just gone with an APSc/S35 sensor.

last time i ve been to the cinema the movie really had lots and lots of wide angle shots * rolleyes

suprjeff: there are other apps that do the same thing, but they don't have the hipster name, just use a different app.

no there actually are no other apps that do the same thing.. there is a fine differents in their filter, they really put a lot more work in a more film like feeling and it is really instant. thats what people wanted a really really easy way to use filters and share photos.

but there could be a new instagram clone coming out. i think facebook is a huge bubble the general public who invests in the stock will lose a lot of money.
it is a bubble just like the whole us economy which is build on extreme dept.

ARTASHES: 645D being much noisier than D800 has better graphs than D700 and 5D mark II for SNR on DXO (print mode) !!! is that mean that D800 is much better than D700 ?! in fact with this logic it's gonna be as good as D3s (somehow even better because D3s and 645D graphs are pretty much the same up to 800 iso for SNR) ???

it is not noiser.. download both files.. print a one meter picture and compare.. or simply compare in photoshop at same resolution for example 8000*xxxx pixel

Dan Tong: This new Nikon sounds fantastic to me (and I have a large investment in Canon lenses). It seems to me that Nikon has often been much more creative and ahead of the technology race than Canon (for example USB3, focusing technology, DX mode, uncompressed HDMI output etc). The video capabilities are excellent too.

In any case I'm happy for Nikon owners who have invested in Nikon lenses. I hope that Canon rises to the challenge. Competition is great for us customers. Congrats to Nikon!

so what? if canon and nikon are owned by the same person who dont want competition than the competitors like sony, pentax, samsung or whoever would gain market share.

that mitsubishi is holding back development in camera business is absolutely ridiculous haha

Slatan: Do this: select RAW, iso 800, and click on the date on the blue clock where it says 15. Now, if you can't see the ugly blotchy jpeg-like artifacts on the d800 image, you need to see the medic. In fact, do something more: select iso 1600 just for the 5d2 and compare with the d800 iso 800 in the same blue clock zone. It will be about the same, so there you have it: 5d2 is one stop better, approximately.

You can also look into the pink - magenta zone, color chart, upper right.
D800 has good details indeed, but it trails the 5d2 in terms of high iso performance, now imagine comparing it with the 5d mark iii - there's no contest here.

that is utter fanboy nonsense
just download the files and compare both at same d800 resolution 7360*4912

even if you compare both at 3000*2000 pixel the nikon d800 looks much cleaner.. "iso 1600 5D II = D800" is really ridiculous haha

i downloaded nx200, 5n, a77 (nex7) iso1600 raw samples, they all look the same if you bring them to 24mp, sharpen each one and reduce chroma noise.

it seems that samsung is making big steps with all their products i think sony no longer has the image sensor advantage, i would say they are equal.
and i am not a samsung fanboy.. my first camera was a sony alpha 100, nikon d90, nikon d300 and now a smaller nx100 because it is more fun to carry around : )

In reply to:

Sdaniella: Is rolling shutter a negative feature still of RED? (like 'jello' video of Nikon?) or of dSLR videos? or videocams for that matter?

or have they resolved this?

samsung silently already fixed the rolling shutter on their new nx200 camera (apc-s sized sensor like sony nex etc)
but the codec is not so nice already.
but they are making big improvements expect to see more from samsung in the video market soon with the nx20 which sure will have better codec options given the rate of improvement at samsung
fast pans are here for example but codec breaks apart with all that leaf footage

aeolos: hmm.. have you guys actually looked at some red footage?
I always thought the reds must be pretty amazing with it 5k and 4k shooting

but from a resolution standpoint the camera is pretty much crap.. the 5k looks only a little better than upscaled footage from a hacked gh2!

images from red footage
http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2011/06/09/red-epic-5k-and-hdrx/

seriously look how bad the quality is even at 5k!

i would simply prefer really good quality 1080p insteat of bad quality 5k.. it is simply a waist of memory space and cumbersome to work with

luben solev: What i find interesting is that DPReview is happy to cover these extremely expensive video cameras that happen to also do stills, but don't cover similarly priced medium format dslrs that are all about photography.

thats because there were no recent annoucements!
there is no doubt they will cover the next medium format too and probably even test it.

you know this news site is pretty new..

in 5 years people will probably laugh how expensive 4k video cameras were.. and how huge ^^
even the 800$ hacked gh2 is already able to put out pretty awesome 1080p.. technology is improving at such fast rates that maybe a cheap gh4 or gh5 will be able to produce awesome 4k..

but photo will never die.. look how many people still use film or retro cameras.. nothing to be afraid of just embrase new technology and everybody buys what the want : )

BeanyPic: Seems as if this will be the main camera for many and I mean many film makers for at least the next 5 years or so. Expect to see footage everywhere from this new piece of kit.

not really.. red also annouced their scarlet x camera
half the price double the features ; )

http://photorumors.com/2011/11/03/red-announces-the-new-scarlet/

but anyways.. competition is always good and those features will make their way into cheaper cameras.. even now the hacked gh2 at 176mbit has really really good 1080p.. even the stock firmware makes pretty good 1080p footage
