Old news. Not a bad lens, but the current kit is the 18-135 IS STM which improves on the original. If you're only going to have one lens, the STM would be nicer to own than the original 18-135...

While you can't go wrong with a Canon flash, you may want to consider the Nissin Di866 II as an alternative. It has all the features you need (ETTL, & HSS, for example) is well reviewed, solidly...

Really enjoyed the rodeo action shots. Looks like a fun event. Might have to see about heading to Asheville myself some time. Thanks for sharing these.

The 40 and 60 may be good lenses, but for cars and landscapes you will almost certainly want to go wider than 64mm and 96mm, which is what those lenses are in 35mm equivalent terms.

What the 15 85 gives you over the kit lens is more coverage at the wide end (which could be very useful at Disney and in general) and a bit more reach (also helpful). What you won't get is...

I've received the 18-135 STM lens and thought I would share initial impressions. First impression confirmed what I already knew, they are very similar in build and appearance. Popping it onto the...

Well, I didn't expect to start such a long and contentious thread. ;) While I'm certainly willing to share my experience with the lens once I receive it, please remember it will only be my...

Thanks for the reply. I have to agree with Lemming51 and tkbslc that there really is no right or wrong choice. It all depends on your paricular wants/needs. After doing the comparisons and...

Can't help on recommendations, but love the shots. I've never even seen an owl in a tree, much less in flight. If these are truly your first ever BIF shots, I can't wait to see the next ones as...

Beautiful capture. Canon 100-400? Considering that you had time to set up a tripod, did you try raising the ISO from 160 to shorten the exposure and perhaps sharpen the images even more? I almost...

The FTM is nice, but for a walk around lens, it is not critical to me. The focus by wire thing may be annoying, but I doubt I would use it all that much. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks again. I'm trying to remain objective. Both are very nice options and either should be a nice improvement over my current 18-135 IS. I do like the range of the STM and IQ seems fine. I...

This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Ever since I got a 60D (about a year ago) the 15-85 was high on my list of must have lenses. As I was about to purchase one, I ran across the...

Good questions. From the Canon site: "It features a refined Image Stabilization system that delivers up to four equivalent stops of shake correction throughout the zoom range...Whether shooting...

You've linked the comparison of the 15-85 to the old 18-135 not the newer STM version. That comparison is here .

Why is everyone in love with the 15-85 as possibly the best all around ef-s lens for crop bodies, while the new 18-135 STM gets no love at all? Most folks cite the lensrental review as proof that...

Thanks Nick. I'm still amazed that they can sculpt things as vertical and intricate as the 8 seconds statue without it collapsing from it's own weight. Very impressive (as are all of the...

Love those night shots. Can't deny the appeal of the Mongols, but I really like the "8 Seconds to Glory" carving. Very different and hard for me to imagine how that is held together. Quite a...

I'm a complete amateur at airshows, but had the chance to shoot one last year with the Sigma 50-500 (non-OS). It's a handful for a full day of shooting and I only had it on a Rebel XS. Loved the...

Thanks for the information on how the snow blocks are made. Sounds like a lot of work. I don't envy you running around shooting in the cold between 3 and 6am, but if it's any consolation, the...
