Why won't they make a DSLR with a large 30mp sensor and NO TOYS - Just give me a full manual camera - all I need to adjust is WB, F, S, ISO and THAT IS ALL. Cost should be 1000.00 and then let me work.

Bigbokeh: Look - once upon a time you could whip out a Hassey and people knew you were serious - now we have this thing that looks like Frankenstein meets Godzilla and we marry a once proud name to JUNK. I don't care for sony cameras at all - None of them are appealing - amusing not appealing. Victor can you pull your head out of your A$$ and give us a system that we can use our legacy glass with FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN! Folks are giving away insanely fantastic glass and moving away from systems that cost 30K just to join the club. I think all of the manufacturers can go to hell for creating this arms race - I remember the Nikon F4 - It was revolutionary but took years to iron out but MAN when you held it in your hands - Magic - So was the 503CX and the Pentax 645. Now we sit here bludgeoning each other to death over CanonSonyNikon's 1 more pixel race. We see bright spots FUJI but mostly imagination SUCKS - Give me something to revive my Rollei and use its optics that isn't 9K and I'm out

The point I'm making is Franken-blad (thanks mate) be damned - I have all the digital equipment I need but to obsolete the T* glass for this is not just a slap - it is a slap with a crapfilled sock. I don't want to go back I just want to move forward elegantly. Give us a V system for 5K - design a back to drop into my F4 to go digital - INNOVATE and CREATE this isn't innovative or creative at all - this is putting lipstick on a pig and calling it Paris Hilton - no wait - bad analogy - I want products that make Bloody sense man - and this anit it. So you think in 100 years someone will look at this camera and mistake it for innovative - only in a post Obama re-elected Killed everything that is decent in the world apocalyptic nightmare that I do not wish to participate in - nope I don't think so... But let's see if history will be kind to this design - Dark days ahead friends if this is our future...

StopMoKid: This is indeed an odd looking concept but what strikes me far more odd is the choice of APS-c. With Hasselblad being a defining name in medium format and the recent unveiling of VG-900, proving that sony is willing to pair a full frame sensor with the e-mount, I would never have guessed they would have dropped down to below full-frame with this model.

I can only assume it involves the market and price targets they plan for this system, but if it cost near as much as the 6D and D600, I fail to see many people choosing this instead of buying a normal nex camera. (Then again, the Leica X2 exists at $2000, with a fixed lens to boot) Ah, and let's not forget sony wants to sell a fixed lens, full frame camera for the price of their A99.

This is an interesting year for sony, I'll give them that.

Amusing - entertaining - must be a great year at Sony to have this much R/D money to throw at nothing - I considered the 99 for about not really but I tried to consider it - now I feel foolish for even the thought... A company like this is scary they can spend so much money and effort to develop products that 4 people will own. I thought Aston Martin was crazy (and they are)

Decnex: Should do well in China, not too many people there will want to be seen with a Sony camera at the moment! All it needs is a big funky lens from Carl Zeiss or schneider K on it. Done to match the cameras aesthetics of course.

what aesthetics?

and a bad way to try and turn a profit - they must think the market is full of morons - I can't wait to see someone walking through the park with one of these - I don't think a prosecutor in the land would prosecute anyone for stoning that person - I don't want to incite violence but anyone that stupid is clearly a threat to the universe...

harald moers: That new H5d is outstanding camera. Problem of price? With 20 K $ or 15 K €, you can just buy an average car like VW Golf or an Used old Bmw. You can not buy a sportscar...like Porsche 911 that costs 90 K €. And a car gives no income money. If you have good customers in photography (advertising, fashion, industry...) your Hassy of 20 K $ will give you more money back...than a Porsche ! ;-) so long..

Cy Cheze: Nice, but... no image stabilization in still mode? Digital stabilization in video? Large sensor notwithstanding, anything small and hand-held usually requires some stabilization. The a99 has sensor-shift stabilization.

The real cost is closer to 2 x $2,800 or $5,600. That's the cost of the camera, plus the penalty in luxury goodies needed to appease the spouse who spots the charge on the monthly credit card bill. An explanation that, "Honey, I've decided to become a serious pro," just won't be very convincing. Clients to hire a photog to "do" an event usually expect something big. On the other hand, there are people who spend more than that for the Friday helicopter to the Hamptons to spend two days in a 6k SF shorefront abode that sits empty most of the year.

With a leaf shutter - no mirror and it's size YOU DON'T NEED IMAGE STABILIZATION and with a price of 2800 it assumes you can track your own faces - nitwit! I'm not a buyer but at least I recognize who this is geared for - You probably cant directly interface with Facebook either - and I'm stopping before I write something offensive.

Look say what you want about Leica - they have 80 years of incredible designs, glass and heritage to warrant the price of their gear - they hit their mark with most everything they create. Now Sony wants us to think they can play at the same level as Leica - Lexis had to prove itself worthy of Benz money - they come close - albeit without a soul - but Sony? Look my advice to Sony would be to look at why Minolta is gone and then stop following their model - Minolta had great features in their cameras but couldn't build or buy glass. Until Sony figures out who they are and what they want to be when they grow up we will continue to get these near Genius or Retarded attempts - they do keep things interesting but I won't be buying into Sony until they can figure themselves out. (Leica, Nikon are decent business models - think mounts, compatibility and longevity)

peevee1: The spec says 14x digital zoom, the press release only mentions 1.4x and 2x digital teleconverter and "By Pixel Super Resolution digital zoom" which is what?

it means with a full frame you can afford to crop it and still have a decent image

I think SIGMA should also fix the aperture at f8 and be done with it - Sorry guys but comparing SIGMA to Sony is like comparing a camera to a fish - if you gave me the Merrill with a fixed aperture I would prefer it to anything Sony calls a camera.
