Opinion: Bought this camera to compliment my DSLR (D300) and replace my Samsung NV11 which only has 5x optical zoom (38-190mm) because of it's 10x ability and its a pocket sized unit. A decent camera especially when its less than $300 & it fits in your pocket.
HD video is also very nice.
Problems: my first purchased unit had a strange sound when recording video. returned and 2nd unit is fine.
2x digital zoom for hd video is dumb. should have allowed optical zoom even if they disabled the sound to prevent recording the noise from the zoom mechanism.
Opinion: Past NV15 Owner. NV11 adds 5x & Man shots
I owned the NV15 (I posted a review for it as well) for a ~2 weeks but returned it for the NV11 because the 11 has a 5x optical zoom & full manual shooting capability.
Interface-wise the NV11 seems pretty much identical to the NV15 except, as I've already alluded to, it allows complete manual shooting capability while the NV15 only had a limited number of aperture/shutter selections when shooting in manual or a/s priority.
Shot quality was not bad and I've been able to take some clear images with it. Low light focusing is difficult for it but then again it's a point and shoot.
Overall, not a bad camera option that fits into my pocket. Can it replace my DSLR? In some situations its probably decent enough but really the main reason I chose it is the cool looks, zoom range, and manual shooting capability and last and most importantly, I can use it for less critical snapshots where I'd rather not have the bulk of my DSLR.
Problems: SIZE: The NV11 is about 1cm thicker due to the 5x lens. Unfortunately most review sites and Samsung's own website says its only 3.3mm thicker. Someone was obviously smoking crack when they measured it and every review site simply took samsung's word for the dimensions because none of them caught the error.
NO ANTI-SHAKE: It does not have a true anti-shake reduction system. What it does to compensate is increase the ISO to allow you to shoot using a higher shutter speed which means you can easily get shots with horrendous amounts of noise especially when it uses ISO400 or higher.
POOR LOW-LIGHT FOCUS: Try to focus on objects in poor light and the camera simply cannot do this reliably. The objects are obviously within focal range but the camera just cannot lock on to them.
Opinion: What great build quality & performance. Coming from a DSLR background and having used digicams for over a decade, I'm quite pleased with the NV15. I shoot mostly w/ a Nikon D70 with a plethora of pro lenses.
While the NV15 doesn't offer the same level of quality as my DSLR, it does offer a great point and shoot solution and contrary to what many reviews on the NV15 and its siblings have said, the Samsung interface is quite intuitive, easy to learn and use. I have yet to look up stuff in their manual.
Problems: About the only problem I've had to contend with is the noise at higher ISO levels (400+).
Feature enhancements I'd like to see include...
- The Auto ISO that allows you to define the Max ISO it move to.
- Auto flash close/retraction. I've read about the dangers in leaving the flash open so it's always a concern. I wish they would have made it auto retracting but I don't know of too many camera's that do that.
