Yes!! When you said shoot from the light side it dawned on me that such a simple suggestion could have made a big difference as I spent the whole shoot (roughly an hour) shooting from the dark side...

that bird was junking on Cheetos!! I was on my way to a water breakout to take pics of that when I noticed a herd of almost 200 seagulls facing the east direction and standing in a parking lot;...

These well all shot using Sigma 17-50 or Sigma 150 Macro lens...  I thought I would give it a go with the equipment I own... of course,, the quality isn't as with an L 100-400 or 70-200... but...

Nice shot... I would try increasing the contrast to make the texture of the bark standout more from the grass background which detracts a little bit from it...just my two cents... keep shooting :)
