nickthetasmaniac: DPR - why have several release announcements today fallen straight to the bottom of the page, while the 6d preview rays at the top?
The answer from Andy Westlake is a piece of quite mind-boggling stupidity! I always thought this was just the result of bug-ridden web programming, but now I find out this is a deliberate policy! DPR should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Time to go back to writing school and learn what 'news' is.
Any news page should be in reverse chronological order. To have a news page that does anything else, that causes news stories to be missed because the come near the bottom of the page when they first appear, renders any news page pointless. It is not a news really an news page at all.
A news page should be in reverse chronological order. Full stop. End of story. No exceptions.
I don't know if this camera will be for me yet.. to many questions that need answers before I will know that. But I heartily applaud Pentax for bring some genuine diversity to the market (with both the Q and the kay-oh-one).
There are big advantages with using a mirrorless-specific lens mount (mainly you can maximise the compactness of the system) and some big advantages with using an established DSLR lens mount (great choice of lenses right from day 1).
Which ever side of the debate you come down on there is now a camera for you... be grateful for that!
I watched the interview with Marc Newson and was mildly amused by his insistence on calling it the k-oh-one, while Pentax wants us to call it the k-zero-one. I always groan at product names that require their pronunciation to be explained! Mind you this isn't Pentax's worst product name... that would have to go to the *ist! (Still no idea how to say that!!)
As for the camera itself... well... it looks weird, but I've always has a bit of a soft spot for weird :-) On purely aesthetic ground I rather like it, and the yellow colour too.
I have lots of questions and concerns about this new camera, but I'm prepared to wait until the camera has been properly reviewed and I've handled it myself before I pass further judgement!
But I can't help but be curious about the Pentax-DA XS lens. I assume that this lens is designed specifically for the k-oh-one (I'm with Mr Newson on how to say it!!) and therefore won't fit on a Pentax K mount DSLR... will there be a whole series of DA XS lenses??
cre8unique: I'm really not a natural customer for superzoom cameras with high zoom ratios (very rarely use anything longer than a 35mm equiv. 100mm), but as I have a Nikon P500 that I won in a competition, I do have some limited experience of this type of camera...
The Nikon P500 at its maximum focal length of 800mm is almost totally unusable. Its almost impossible to even find you subject in the viewfinder, never mind hold the camera steady (even with IS). In fact the P500 is practically useless at anything more that 300mm.
But the wide angle setting of 22mm on the P500 is really nice to have and provides unique perspectives for a camera like this. So to give up even a couple of mm at the wide end for an utterly meaningless 200mm at the telephoto end is such a waste.
Zoom ratio is just an alternative to megapixels as a way to generate excitement on the sales floor... like an extra couple of megapixels it is utterly meaningless in practice. IMHO this type of camera is gadget 1st and camera 2nd.
@ Peter Nelson
The fact you will only get useful results with these excessively long super-zooms after many years of practice supports my point: the vast majority of people are never going to get decent photos at 800mm, so extending the range to 1000mm is of precious little practical use. It is a marketing gimmick only.

Mssimo: Does anyone else hate the guts of the cnet reviewer called Lori Grunin? She just trashed the hell out of this camera on her video review. Let me get some feedback on what you guys think. reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/
Cant wait for the dp review to come out!
I find these comments really quite offensive. She did not trash the camera. The overall rating was 'very good'... how is that trashing the camera? She seemed quite complimentary on most things except image quality. And since none of use have used the camera ourselves, maybe we should not comment on the veracity of her image quality comments until we have. But in any case, throwing abuse about her looks just because she wasn't 100% positive about your favourite camera brand is childish and silly.
