I just tested and the motor seems to be strong enough.I wouldn't like to have the filter permanently attached, though... it does feel like the lens is suffering a bit ;)

If you often find that 55mm is too short, get the zoom lens. Else go for the 35mm f/1.8, it offers some great new possibilities. It's also not too wide because of the D50's DX format.

My guess would be about 100-140g; but I have no way of measuring, only comparing. ;)
