Might consider LREnfuse with lightroom.  Program is donation ware and very effectively automates stacking.  Makes my computer groan results are nice and can then be tweeked more if needed in LR....

Thanks for the explanation.  I don't shoot birds much, partly because they are hard to track.  Looks to me like a creative adaption that is really useful.
