It does not inspire confidence in new AF-S lenses; This is a superb lens and it still commands a high price in the UK. I hope you can find someone to fix it.

I can see more detail in the wood detail on the right, in the 1.4 also there is marginally more blurring on the right hand side photo. Odd that the cameras should perform differently. Larger lenses...

Yes! I agree that f5.6 seems very early to start silent ISO boost, It may just be my monitor, you could judge that better.
The wider lenses will let in more of all the rays, straight ones and...

I have not seen anyone on here bragging about their 1.4G 85mm lenses, In fact when discussing my older 85mm 1.4D the owners of the newer lens have responded with reserved and polite opinions.
But...

The 85 1.8 has a slower T Stop and it looks to me like the D800E has increased the ISO Automatically and with the loupe you can see slightly more grain than the 1.4 which also looks to be better...

Ken, Start at about 12 feet away that should give you about 6 inches of Total DOF (focus on the eye), At close distances DOF is nearer 50/50 either side of the focal point.

J2photo, Those are fabulous shots.
As stated above you cant evaluate a lens in a few hours.
I posted a few days ago how good Nikon top glass is, and the old saying put your money in the optics,...

Firstly the 85mm 1.8G is an amazing lens, it is made possible only because Nikon owns their own optical glass company, and are masters at precision moulding, a lens of this quality could not have...

Ken I went through this learning curve a few years ago with the 50mm 1.4D, and after a lot of blurred images I realised that if the camera moved a little bit and the subject moved a little bit, The...

Firstly at 4 feet and f1.4 the depth of field (FX) is 5/8ths of an inch 15mm in metric. NOt for the inexperienced. Which is why pros love this lens and amateurs are moved to tears.
It is an order...

This is my first high end prime and is much better than I thought it would be, I agree about it being magical, and is sharper than the charts suggest. It must be the contrast in these lenses. It...

There was another tree behind the apple tree branch and the sun was shining brightly through its branches. You can see near bottom left where the sensor is overloaded, and by the speed.
Like you I...

Thanks Keith, there is a porcelain like quality to the colours, I would love to see what this lens could do on D3s pixels.
Weather getting better but still feels cold, Yes these are Welsh apple...

Took this photo against the evening sun and was quite surprised that there was not more flare; this lens continues to amaze on every occasion I use it. John

I would say the 85 1.4G is one of the best lenses Nikon has ever made, but as Photozone remarked
The Nikon 85mm f1.4G
"As you'd expect from a fast portrait lens the quality of background blur is in...

Thom rates the above 85's as second only to the $5000.00 200mm f2 prime for portraits. He also says that the 85 1.4d is not a flat field lens, so you can't judge the corners on a flat target, in...

"Monster MP cameras" and mass production conventional lenses are increasingly becoming a mis-match for for each other:
1) Lower-cost consumer lenses have less optical quality control, and Monster...

Is this the most pointless thread in the history of pointless threads, when people are arguing whether a knife is better than a fork!

This is wrong on two counts:
a) What you were printing/ displaying before has not changed and will get better in some respects, I doubt you could even see the difference unless you were printing...
