Given the advances in sensor technology over the past few years, is Full Frame really necessary? Up until recently I might have said "Maybe not...". The latest generation of smaller sensor cameras have gotten so good, and the appeal of smaller and lighter bodies and lenses is so great, that in many parts of the world DSLR sales are being trumped by Compact System Cameras.

But now with Sony's new A7 and A7r Full Frame cameras, which are actually smaller than some MFT models, which way are things going to go? Find out more.

The new Fujinon XF lens is a 2.4x zoom lens ? equivalent to 15-36mm in 35mm format. Its ultra wide to standard focal length capabilities make it the perfect choice for shooting dynamic, high impact landscapes images with maximum detail from the foreground to the far distance. It also comes into its own when shooting interiors, making small rooms look more impressive, while the maximum F4.0 aperture that is available throughout the zoom range, enables handheld shooting even in low light conditions.

It has been a cold week in the US.  Here in Indianapolis it got down to 5 degree (F) a day ago.  For you Celsius people that is -15.  We have published a lot of Antarctica images and ice and it is all too much a reminder of winter.  So, today we switch gears and give you a glimpse of warmer times to come.  Frank Sauer shares his article on Garden Variety.  This is an essay on photographing in your own backyard.  However it is a lot more.  It reminds us that we can find a lot of things to photograph near our homes without having to travel great distances.  Take your camera off the shelf and get out and find something close by that you have seen many times and try to see it differently.  Take some images and if you are bold enough share them on the forum.

There was great response to Adam Woodworth’s recent article on Landscape Astrophotography.  Adam has made a 30 minute video illustrating how he works the image to come up with the final image.  It’s a great Photoshop tutorial on blending and layers.  Check it out HERE.

My good friend and fellow workshop leader Josh Holko from Australia recently completed a beautiful video about the Arctic.  There is some excellent photography in the video and it is well done.  Enjoy Arctic Expedition

Speaking of Arctic Expeditions, stay tuned this week as LuLa launches 2 back to back Arctic trips this July.  These will be most unique so look for our announcement very soon.

The new Sony A7r has, arguably, the finest 35mm format sensor ever made. Leica's M lenses are, again arguably, the best 35mm format lenses ever made.

What happens with they mate? Indeed – what could go wrong?

Some camera makers are content to put new chrome and tail fins on last year's model. Not Sony. They believe in pushing the envelope, and with the just shipping RX-10 they have created a new camera that blends characteristics of several previous categories and models, yet which manages to forge new territory. But how successful have they really been with the RX10 and can it justify its price?

The LuLa team has been quite busy on a number of fronts.  Michael as you have seen in our recent video has made his annual trek to Mexico with Chris.  Seems though that Mexico has lost their internet somewhere. Based on headlines they have been loosing a number of things lately. So, Michael and Chris have very spotty internet and hopefully will be back on line 100% very soon.

It's always good to switch gears and today our regular contributor Alain Briot has done just that.  We share his essay The Fine Art Photography Business.

Update: Chris and I are now back online. Telmex has to be the world's worst Internet service. It's up and down like a Yo-Yo. Yesterday we had connection, but the country's DNS servers were down. Go figure.

TeoreX announces iResizer 2.4, a new version of the image resizing and anti-cropping tool. Implementing an intellectual approach to resizing, the program can remove unwanted objects from a picture or reduce spacing between objects by "folding" the photo using a special algorithm. Often the only thing that spoils a perfect picture is its sizing. Wrong aspect ratio, too much empty space between objects, non-ideal cropping and so on. iResizer, a cross-platform tool fixes all such issues by applying smart algorithms that virtually "folds" a photo, just like a paper picture, so that unnecessary parts and fragments simply disappear. ###

Chris Sanderson, Michael Reichmann and Lula (Michael's dog) drove last week from Toronto, Canada to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a distance of 4,000 kilometers. We covered it in 40 hours, spread over four and half days of driving. We also filmed the entire trip with a dash-cam.

Since no one in their right mind would watch a forty hour video, we compressed it down to less than one hour. You can find it online here, if you're crazy enough to watch it.

One of the benefits of leading workshops to various worldwide locations is you get a chance to meet exceptional people and photographers.  Miles Flint and I met in the fall of 2009 and over the last few years I have had the opportunity to see Miles at several PODAS workshops.  I had the chance to sit down with Miles on the Kimberley, Australia PODAS workshop and talk about his photographic growth over the years and to take a peek at his gear bag.  Luminous-Landscape will be doing more interviews and articles like this in the future.  Article and Video . . .
