I was thrilled at Panasonic’s announcement of this style of camera after long time wondering about GoPro’s seeming lack of video quality in real world ambient conditions.

I own several types of Panasonic cameras going back over 20 years, but lately been very satisfied with testing Sony’s AS15 (upgraded to 60P) features. Smaller than both GoPro and Panasonic I used as a low profile headworn camera mounted on external fed custom stereo-surround mics.
See test video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dmxPumPDe0&list=UUXZtQbvLONRZQQYA0j-wfxA

Bottom line is the HX-A100 is incomplete as a semiserious video camera for not having external stereo mic input. I do want one, but also want true HD stereo-surround audio to go with the camera’s excellent HD video.

Readers viewing Panasonics sample video should note some video clips taken with a GH4 as mentioned at the video’s text bottom

In reply to:

JohnMatrix: two questions:
1. why would you want to do this? (the end result is quite annoying to watch IMO).
2. why is this even 'news'?

Using the most compact Go Pro Hero3 as wide movie capture on a super zoom or similar larger body camera seems a great idea for gorilla style documentary projects. What’s been typically lacking in these rigs is the capturing of POV high quality audio. Personally I use a custom head mounted stereo surround mic going directly into the larger camera external mic input, or usually even better, into a separate dedicated audio flash deck like a Sony PCM-M10 resting in a shirt pocket. For more examples of video + audio done in this fashion see links to GuySonicStudios YouTube uploads or my site page sonicstudios . com / videomic .htm

This new 'camera' is kinda cool having full HD video features. NOT so clear if the stereo minijack serves as Stereo mic input as it should, but no mention so far and no labeling can be seen in the photo galery on the NOKIA site. As always, devices of this complexity would only last a few hours working as a camcorder, but external power remain an option for longer continuous or or extra batteries for non-continuous video recording run times. I usually custom fabricate external battery solutions for many different recording device models when required. While the internal stereo mic is very clean sounding to say the least, it lacks consistant stereo imaging. Very interested to see how this camera/phone works with a special stereo-surround mic I've custom made for personal an industry pro projects. That is, if it works at all with external audio input. While 21x zoom seems awsome, it seems somewhat unusable in daylight without some kind of hood to view the LCD display.
