this is specialSerenity
If the screen can't be seen underwater or out in the sun and surf or the beach it is useless for the environment most of us want it for. If you are out in the surf it is very frustrating to see a reflection of yourself in the screen. I tried several. The Fuji had a great screen but the IQ was terrible. Frankly, I was quite irritated because reviewers never mentioned the one thing that made them useless. Also irritated because this one looks like a cool camera rendered useless because the designers never got it out of the lab or they would never have let it happen.
These little cameras are getting closer and closer to doing all the thinking for the average vacationer. It is very addictive to go skiing or boating or walking around Disney with an 8 ounce camera that can do videos, shoot in very, very low light, and have incredible long reach for the wildlife reserve. Hope it all works, especially the IS. I see the feature set as an effort to keep pocket photography competitive by doing more than a smartphone can.
Nikon looked at the Mac and the Iphone and said lets make a camera for that market. Those people like to make a casual records of their fun times and they pay higher prices for cool products. We will subtly emulate the Iphone type designs and subliminally suggest Steve Jobs in our ads. A whole new generation of affluent photo sharers will follow like the Iphone zombies. If that doesn't work we will lower the price with kit packaging and sell them to all the nikon faithful who will thank us because they are sick to death of carrying three pounds around to take pictures at the dog park and the soccer game. Thats it, Thats all there is to it! I am not being cynical in fact I want one.
Looking out a bit further, Imagine sensors in say, your sun glass frames. The imaging is continuous and sees everything you see. Perhaps in holographic 3 D.It transmits itself into the "cloud". Later at home, you view and save what you want. The hobby of photography is gone the way of the photograghers darkroom. All it takes is sensor and computer processing power, just like anything digital. And that has no limit. The human eye will soon be equaled and exceeded. So will the so called photographer himself because he is only a relic of the analog mind. Images will be created and saved and enjoyed ,but they will be automated and effortless.
ISO 12800 !!
Thanks, This line of cameras has always confused me. You have organized them logically. As far as the who buys what categories, I think most of us here, have several cameras for various purposes.
WilbaW: Hello Roger. Great article. I have included a link to it in one of mine. You might be interested since we have some territory in common -http://www.dpreview.com/articles/5402438893/busted-the-myth-of-open-loop-phase-detection-autofocus
When the lens tube on any lens is extended it has play in it. The 2 or 3 tubes on some p&s zooms flex from this looseness when extended. Yet the performance is acceptable. I assume the AF works with the result and so "compensates" for the misalignment? However this would seem to indicate that there is a fairly large tolerance for misalignment of this kind?
Thank you Fujifilm
this is great
should have 3+ stars
remarkable you are the snow specialist but this is obviously the best
When mild zoom lenses were first introduced, this was what I thought they were for. Reframing and composing with zoom was however and still is overlooked. Also a simple theory of zooming or cropping, is to reduce boring (negative, and usually dark) areas while keeping the subject open, but also framed with pleasant space, rather than pinching it with excessive crop. I dont see the need for the frame when you can do the same thing with zoom or cropping. His last 2 paragraphs are all you need to know. It is simple enough to experiment with digital.
digby dart: Anyone looking for a $900 pink camera to hang around the neck at weddings - this is it! :)
I want one. Make mine Red. I like my phone cam too but then I am stupid- and I travel light.
Pati Feroolz: 1/4th the area of an aps-c sensor. useless.
Its not useless if you travel, or if you hike, or in any way get more than 1/4 mile from your Suv
Vibrio: sweet a apoint and click interchangeable lens camera.
will probably sell well
I am one of the idiots. Good design, latest tech, lenses in proportion to body size. better sensor. Travel light, it is freedom.
