I never edit RAW files. I always use the manufacturer's converter and convert to 16-bit tiff, then edit the tiff file.

Why bother with dng? Download Nikon's converter and convert to 16-bit tiff, process, then produce whatever jpegs you require. Even free FastStone Image Viewer will open and process a D90 nef.
