By the above I mean that in live view the AF performance of the two cameras are essentially identical. However, the AF performance of the SL1 when focusing through the OVF is significantly faster.

The AF is much improved by the v2.0.2 firmware but it still does not match the SL1 CDAF performance. Best to try it out to see if it is OK for you.
