I agree that light make a huge difference.  Shooting into the shadows is always a challenge. The colors don't always pop the way they  should, the backgrounds or darker places in the shot can...

The angle of the shot makes me think the dog wasn't far from you. Get down to it's level and have someone throw a ball parallel from you. You'll be able to get some good shots that way. Much sure...
