tom1234567: consumers will buy these cameras and realize they aren’t much better than their phones

quiquae: Never ceases to amaze me how people keep waltzing in to give self-righteous pontifications about this low-end superzoom that they were never going to buy anyway.

"The problem is that it is a low end camera with a high end price masquerading as a cheap alternative. There are plenty of cameras from Olympus, Panasonic, and Sony that will wipe the floor with this camera and do it for less money."
Please let us know which cameras, just dont forget these are compact superzooms

mpgxsvcd: These cameras may help Canon sell a few cameras now but it will hurt them in the long run. Uninformed consumers will buy these cameras and realize they aren’t much better than their phones. Then other people will show them results from cameras like the Panasonic FZ200 and LX7 and they will finally realize that the problem is that “Canon cameras” are no better than their phones. Some of the other cameras are actually much better.

"These cameras may help canon sell a few cameras now but it will hurt them in the long run"
A few cameras!?
Take a look at customer comments on P/S canon cameras on mainstream sites and youll see lots of happy customers.

Donnie G: Doesn't matter whether you love em or hate em, these Canon superzooms will outsell all of their mirrorless competitors combined. And Canon will continue to make tons of money while the rest of the industry starves due to lack of interest from the average consumer. Only gear heads are concerned with specs, and they make up less then 10% of camera sales. These cameras are being sold to the 90% of consumers who are not camera geeks. Deal with it!

FZ1000 is no compact, LX7, RX100, S110 have much less zoom.
Im no tech savvy but ive read that using a 1" sensor would not be possible in a compact superzoom camera but probably this is not true.

In reply to:

mpgxsvcd: Please don't buy these cameras. This only encourages Canon to build more terrible products.

Still FZ200 has the same sensor size of this cameras, these canons have more zoom and are much smaller and cheaper so they do have advantages over the FZ200

Gonini: What a coward and cheap move by Sony! So all of their cameras are overpriced? Proof that the company does not stand behind their products. Those defending the price cut (and sony) probably did not buy this camera at its overpriced original price!

Users do

JJLMD: Canon and Nikon are tomorrow's IBM and Kodak unless they undergo an extreme makeover. I rekindled this hobby in earnest about 2 years ago after decades of disinterest. When I started researching gear, I started researching only Canon and Nikon but it didn't take me very long to realize that Sony, Fujifilm and Olympus were making the most exciting products. Look, there are still people who still see Cadillac as THE prestige brand so it'll take awhile but there's no doubt in my mind that Canon and Nikon are on the same path as IBM and Kodak. These companies were once dominant and during their reign, it was unimaginable they would fall all the way to the bottom.

Hmmmm, Google "sony losing money with PS4"

Marty4650: Serious underwater photography was always done with DSLRs tightly sealed in very expensive waterproof enclosures. But for underwater snapshots, these cameras are great.

This whole category ("underwater snapshot cameras") might disappear if the iPhone 6 is waterproof.

I suppose a waterproof tablet could be next?

"Sony has a waterproof tablet and phone, its been out for a year"

Just be sure to have all ports closed properly if not bye bye cellphone/tablet

Probably not even in a pool I would risk using a waterproof cellphone
