Opinion: My first DSLR, an easy choice at the time as the only competition was the slow and underfeatured Canon 300 or the more desireable but pricey Canon 20. The Nikon sat easily mid way between these two - now, two years on, the competition has changed somewhat.
I wouldn't buy another 70 unless it was really really cheap as other options are now superior. The D50 for one is a better bet in my view, though lacks one or two toys. However, my 70 still gives me everything I need. I do find the pp discipline a pain, and one day I may give in to that and upgrade. Mind you, pp is what makes the shot your own. Maybe not a bad thing.
Problems: In terms of malfunctions, I've only had one. It went all weird and wouldn't select f-stops. In the end it only needed to have the lens removed and replaced a few times to exercise the contacts.
All other problems have been abscent minded user errors - the usual thing, forgetting that iso was changed for one shot... about a fortnight ago, forgetting that the exp comp was adjusted to find out how it works, then forgot to set it back... about a year later.
Design wise:
- Viewfinder is way too dark.
- DOF preview is a joke, but I never liked it on a brighter AF film camera either.
- Needs a reset to start button - ie, reset to my settings, not factory settings so that each time I get it out I can do a one click reset and know exactly where which of the 7million options have been selected.
