Replied in Arlington National Cemetery
Good subjects.
A couple of photographic concerns. First is the over-saturated colours. The other is the background elements. You need to work harder on the backgrounds, always the key to a good...

Replied in Problem with exposure display and image brightness
Are you just looking at the image preview, or are you looking at the histogram as well? Its possible that your LCD is set way too bright, the histogram will be accurate regardless of the LCD...

Replied in Finally got my 70-200 VRII! (With my D7K)
There was a good article some time back by a lens hiring place which gave an excellent explanation of front/back focus. If I had a url reference I'd point you to it.
Essentially, its a two...

Replied in "Stages of a Photographer" - a discussion
How about:
Who do you think you are kidding Mr Clinchy
If you think you're on a run
We are the boys who will help you little game
We are the boys who will make you think again
So who do you...

Replied in "Stages of a Photographer" - a discussion
John - mine would look too much like the start of Dad's Army. The words to the song wouldn't need too much tweaking either.
A friend of a relative. Hey, I have a friend who takes blurred bird...

Replied in "Stages of a Photographer" - a discussion
I like the idea of it, but think it has been over-simplified and doesn't reflect my experience at all. Mine would be twisted all over the place, totally knotted in parts.
My knowledge plateaued...

Replied in Sunrise CC please
Its hard to give advice without knowing what you were after, but here are a few comments.
The WB is a matter of shooting raw and tuning it back home, or working on setting it accurately on...

Replied in D300s focus recompose
I would think examples are meaningless unless they get the focus point wrong - and then it would be a matter of identifying where it went wrong.
Here's one at 20th sec using elbows on table for...

Replied in D300s focus recompose
I've set mine so the focus is activated by the AF button in the back, not the shutter release button. Once you get used to this its hard to understand why anyone would want to use the shutter...

Replied in D300s focus recompose
Isn't face detect only available in live view?
Focus recompose is OK most of the time. If using a fast lens wide open it won't be the most accurate as the focus plane is the all important...

Replied in D80 does not turn off
My D70 did the same. I assumed it was corrosion as it regularly got rained on.
I wouldn't worry about it. I found the battery life didn't suffer, and its still going strong. Every now and again...

Replied in pop it in your custom menu
you still have to click around a bit, but it makes it far easier to turn on and off.

Replied in Want a digital FE2? Looks like Olly are going to do an OM
Yeh, but cameras, like cars, need to compete to attract people who have more money than sense. They are only a rational purchase for professionals - so looks and image are everything.
I'll come...

Replied in No, thanks!
Are you serious? Retro will always be in! It happens in all product design, cars, fridges, you name it. Ok, maybe not pocket phones or mp3 players (yet). I doubt any manufacturer will try and...

Replied in Want a digital FE2? Looks like Olly are going to do an OM
Wasn't the size and weight of the D40 one of its selling points? I'd expect nikon recognise that small appeals to a lot of people, and as the technology becomes more compact I'm sure all the...

Replied in RAW Cropping question for the pros
Errr, have you got the right word there?
Do you mean crucial?
Either way, I can't help but disagree disagree! Desirable, or maybe highly desirable at...

Replied in Basic exposure question
That makes sense, though in a lot of cases means it must be pretty similar to M mode.
I find I use full M almost exclusively. I fell out with exposure compensation and much prefer knowing...

Replied in The power of simplification
There's a hint of irony in your opening question - surely coming up empty is the ultimate in minimalism?
I think you are making a fair point, but the example is too much about cropping rather...
